4th Puppy Rescued a Week Later From Storm Drain

Last week we brought you the story about the puppies who were rescued from a storm drain after heavy rainfall in Corpus Christi, Texas. Everyone including rescuers thought they had gotten all of the puppies out of the storm drain and to safety when nearly a week after rescuers thanked those whose efforts helped save the puppies a whimper was heard from the same storm drain. Despite all odds without food, his mother, or his siblings for company the last little puppy made his presence known and was rescued. The puppy shown in the picture above clearly has some sort of infection going on and need a lot of cleaning up to make sure there aren’t other injuries or issues going on.

The last puppy a little male is currently at the hospital being treated for pneumonia presumably from the water that had gotten in his lungs from the heavy rain and not getting the necessary treatment right away. The veterinarian believes with treatment he will pull through and be reunited with his family soon as he is eating and drinking and getting healthier by the day.

When the family was rescued by the organization For the Love of Strays they were taken to a local vet to be checked out and treated when it was found that the mother dog is Heartworm positive. For now since she is still nursing her puppies they feel the best course of treatment is to give her monthly Heartworm pills and hold off on more aggressive treatment which would mean prematurely  weaning the puppies. Heartworm treatment is expensive and very taxing on the dog who will need to be kept from overexerting her heart which usually means cage rest during treatments and with little puppies that need her care that does not seem fair.
