High School students enrolled in John D. Rockefeller IV Career Center from two neighboring school’s Weir and Oak Glen have built dog houses to help keep some shelter dogs out of the biter cold this winter. Students from the building construction class built the dog houses as part of a Skills USA club project. In total they built six new dog houses in a two week period.
The Hancock County Animal Foundation was in desperate need as many of their current dog houses are in horrible disrepair. The students were able to fill a need in their community while receiving hands on experience. Once the houses were all built the classes were invited to the Shelter to meet with the dogs who would be benefiting from a solid roof over their head and a warm place to sleep this winter while they are waiting to be adopted.

SkillsUSA is a national nonprofit organization serving teachers and high school and college students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations, including health occupations.
What a great story but I would have loved to see photos of the students with the dog houses they built!
Our oldest son built a Nordic Dog House when he was in first year of high school. No altruistic motives then–we had a dog and he needed a shop project. That thing ended up in the back yard of Hubby’s downtown Toronto office. One winter, a homeless man was found living in it! Proof positive that those insulated, around-the-corner-entrance dog houses really work to keep our dogs warm in winter.

Very good story! Always nice to hear about young students doing good for the community and helping the shelter animals. Also, for the students to see the dogs, will be a reminder of animals in need.
