How to Keep Your Dog Safe Around the Christmas Tree
You may love putting up a Christmas tree each year, but what you may not love is the dangers it can pose to your dog. Well don’t feel like you need to sacrifice you’re your holiday décor, as you can still enjoy a lovely tree while keeping your dog safe at the same time. Take a look below at some helpful tips to get you started.
1. Check all lighting cords.
Be sure the light cords on your tree are in good condition and free from any damage. Keep them a few branches up so your dog is not tempted to chew on them or pull them down which can pose quite a few safety hazards.
2. Opt for plastic ornaments.
Glass ornaments can pose a danger should they fall and break. Instead, opt for plastic or non breakable ornaments. That way if your pet gets curious and tried to pull one down, or one just happens to fall, you don’t need to worry about glass shards harming him.
3. Skip the bottom branches.
Don’t place any lights or décor on the last few branches. This way, curious noses and paws won’t be tempted to rummage through them. Instead, place items a few branches up and out of reach.
4. Keep the water reservoir covered.
Your dog may be tempted to get under the tree and drink the water from the watering stand. Keep this area covered with a weighted tree skirt so that your dog does not pose a danger to himself by crawling under the tree or drinking something he shouldn’t.
5. Tie the tree to a stable surface.
Tie some string to the top half of the tree and then attach the string to the wall with a nail or hook so that the tree has additional support. This way, the tree is more stable and should your pet become excited around it, you don’t need to worry about him knocking it over or it falling on him.
