Cooking for Dogs – Watermelon

Cooking for your dogs does not have to be a long drawn out process that takes hours a day and sometimes it doesn’t involve any cooking at all. It doesn’t even need to be the sole source of your dogs food. There is no reason why they can’t have store bought kibble with some special added fresh fruits and vegetables on top the same fruits and vegetables that you bought for yourself that would go bad if you don’t finish it quick enough.

Watermelon is a great example of that for two reasons. It is going out of season so even in the fridge it is not going to last as long as it would have during the summer. I was out at the local produce market with my dad and we happened to find a giant watermelon that looked perfect so we bought it for us but since it would go bad before we would be able to finish it the dogs are getting to share. I only give the dogs the part that I would eat but I do know dogs that are given their own slices rind and all (out in the grass) and they will eat the white part as well. If you have a kitty in the house too some of them love watermelon so be sure to offer a bite to them. The second reason why watermelon is a great example of why cooking for your dog is not something that has to be a long drawn out process. You were cutting the watermelon for yourself anyway and now your dog gets fresh fruit too.

You can save the watermelon juice from cutting to pour over their dinner. Watermelon pieces can be given as a special treat after a long walk to help cool them down or cut into even smaller pieces and used as a food topper. Try to get as many seeds out as possible but if they do get a few well you might just find you have your own watermelon patch in the middle of the yard next year.

With anything that you feed your dogs don’t give they too much or they will get an upset stomach and throw up.
