Mango the Companion Dog Runs Through Rush Hour Traffic In Portland Oregan

Owner Dan Dowdy brought Mango the dog to the Gateway Transit Center to pick up her mom from her first day of school after suffering a stroke when the 4-year-old Pomeranian slipped out of her collar and ran onto the highway. Mango came into the family two years ago after her owners stroke as therapy and companion for the woman.

Police dispatchers first started getting calls around 4:15 p.m. of a dog loose on the ramp from I-405 to I-84. Live video from Oregon Department of Transportation cameras showed drivers blocking the road to try and catch the dog so it would no longer be running in the middle of the highway. Mango ran up and down the I-84 for at least 15 minutes before finally running up an on-ramp and into a neighborhood. Eventually Mango ran off the highway and towards Madison High School. By the time Mango had decided to leave the highway and find somewhere safer to run she had an entourage of Animal control officers, countless motorist, her dad, news photographers and even a helicopter crew from a TV station were all looking for her to try and get her to safety.

Mango finally stopped running when authorities were able to pick up her mom and bring her to the area that Mango had been spotted. She opened her arms called Mango and finished her run right in her moms arms. Below is the video of Mango’s run down the highway, through traffic, and finally into her mom’s arms.

  1. This is ridiculous. Have the dog wear a collar it can’t back out of, and train the thing!

Actually they adopted Mango a few months before Linda had her first stroke. It was perfect timing, as Mango was a big part of Linda’s healing, and regaining mobility in her hands by brushing MangMang. The healing power of dogs is amazing, and Mango is a very special little dog who I’m thankful is in my family. This dog and person mean the world to each other, as is apparent by Mango looking for her Mama in ever vehicle that stops, and ending her wild run by leaping into Linda’s arms.
