The Perfect Outdoor Plants for Dog Owners

If you have a dog, you might be wondering what plants are ideal for your yard and garden. Since dogs tend to explore and be quite rough on yards, you want to be careful when choosing and spending money on plants. Take a look below at some helpful suggestions for the perfect outdoor plants for dog owners. You can still have your yard looking great while keeping your pup safe!
1. Roses
Use roses as barriers to areas where you won’t want your dog to wander. The prickly thorns will deter them in no time, and the roses themselves do not contain chemicals poisonous to dogs. You should be prepared to keep the roses on their side of the space or you dog will step on the thorns as they play in the grass. The dogs don’t seem bothered by stepping on a thron but they don’t tend to try and get into the garden through them either. While we haven’t done any testing off leash they try to get into grandpa’s garden every time we visit but not through the roses.
2. Euphorbia
This is a beautiful yet quite rugged plant that also has some rough edges. Use it to block off areas that you don’t want your dog exploring. They won’t care for it and will go around it or the opposite direction all together.
3. Bamboo.
Bamboo is a tall and decorative plant that works great blocking off delicate flower beds or crops as well. Have a water feature you don’t want your dog to touch? Just plant some bamboo around it. It adds lots of color and character too! I really like bamboo and would love to plant some but first we need our water feature.
A note: Bamboo can get quite large very quickly speak with a professional before picking which type of bamboo you would like.

4. Daisies
Daisies can offer some ground cover and are quite tough and resilient. Use them to cover large areas and they won’t let you down! Plus, many varieties are perennials and will come back year after year. I am a huge fan of Gerber Daisies. I love their vibrant color and their big flowers.
5. Fuchsia
Have some fuchsia in hanging baskets to add color to your deck and yard. They are quite resilient and can withstand abuse, plus they are just naturally gorgeous to look at. Want some sweet smells in your yard to mask the dog smells? Fuchsia can help you out.

I am surprised that you would suggest plants that could potentially harm or injure our animal babies. To let them find out about thorns and rough edges by being ‘deterred’ by them is an unnecessary lesson, and, quite honestly, sounds a little hostile on your part, which I am sure you will debate, but your words are out there already. I would NEVER put my animals in harms way, and no garden is worth that.
First the thorns are not going to hurt them and should be inside the garden area. I am not telling you to purposefully have your dogs step on them or get their noses in them. I specifically said in the post make sure the roses stay inside the garden so that they do not step on them.
I don’t see an issue with having plants that will deter your dogs from digging in the garden. No one is saying to teach your dog a lesson simply saying they will deter dogs from digging in the garden because they don’t want to go through them.
