Choosing The Right Food For Your Small Dog – Getting Through the Commercial Claims

Choosing The Right Food For Your Small Dog #PureEssentials

Picking the right food for any dog is difficult and time consuming. We are bombarded with television commercials telling us this food or that food is the best for our dogs. Then we get to the store and there are so many options how do you decide? The second you walk in you are faced with rows and rows of food for your dog all claiming to be the best nutrition for your dog. The commercials practically say that by eating this or that food your dog will become Superdog flying through the air, saving little Johnny from the well, scaling 12 story burning buildings to rescue someone from a fire, you get the idea. As a dog owner we want to find a food that is packed with quality ingredients that will help our dog live a long, happy, healthy life.

Choosing The Right Food For Your Small Dog – Going to the Pet Food Store

In order to help you figure out what food is going to meet your needs and provide your dog with the nutrition it needs I decided to take Davinia and Indiana on a shopping trip to PetSmart last week so that we could share how we make out Pet Food decisions. Small dogs need quality nutrition the same as any other dog but with small dogs it needs to be delivered in a food that packs a major nutritional punch in a small quantity. That means finding a food that starts with animal protein, isn’t too high in fat, includes vegetables and fruit to help give them the vitamins and minerals they need from a whole food source, and most recently for us means grain free.

Choosing The Right Food For Your Small Dog – Dry Food, Wet Food, Treats?

Limited Ingredient Dog Food #PureEssentials

I could be wrong but small dogs tend to get a lot of “special” treats. Their cute nature and big brown eyes tends to get them whatever they want (even if they never knew they wanted it in the first place). That is why I was so excited to find a food that not only has a high quality dry line up for all ages and size dogs but has 2 different options for wet food. By options I mean container size not flavors.

Anyone with small dogs knows that most options in wet food come in a can size that means you will have to figure out a way to store the food and then warm it up the next time you go to use it. We don’t use wet food everyday so that means either letting Davinia and Indiana eat the food until it is finished finding a bigger friend to share with or throwing out the leftovers. As you can see from our pictures and video this line of food comes with a container that is the perfect size for us and comes in an assortment of flavors that they love. That makes Davinia and Indiana really happy.

Choosing The Right Food For Your Small Dog – Healthy Teeth

Limited Ingredient Treats

What about teeth. Anyone with a small dog knows that when it comes to keeping their teeth strong and healthy small dogs need a lot of help. Most food concentrated on the dry food option and you are lucky if they make a wet food option. No matter what quality food you feed you small dog or any size dog if you can not keep their teeth healthy your dog will eventually need major help from the vet to fix the problem. Small dogs are notorious for bad teeth. Maybe it goes back to all of those special treats they get or that they don’t like to have their teeth brushed but most small dog owners will say that anything that helps them keep their dog’s teeth clean and healthy that their dogs will like is a major plus in their book.
