Deck the Halls and Help Shelter Pets #BetterwithPets

Deck the Halls and Help Shelter Pets

‘Tis the season to be jolly as we deck the Halls with boughs of Holly. As we open our homes to family and friends and the hustle and bustle of the season it is easy to put other things on the back burner. No need to think about the tough stuff again until the new year. But this is the Season more then any other that your local animals shelters and rescues really need you to remember and help shelter pets. So why not do it in a way that is fun and will remind all of your guests about the pets that are spending the holidays at the shelter. I am not suggesting that you dampen the mood or grill your friends and family. In fact I am suggesting just the opposite. Deck the Halls with dog and cat treats. Yep I just said that. Deck the halls with things you can donate to the shelter pets after you are done with them.

What you need in order to deck the halls and help shelter pets:
Glass Bowls and / or Vases (you will want to have the bowls and vases with you when you shop for the collars!)
Red and or Green Dogs or Cat Collars
An assortment of Dog Treats
An assortment of Cat Treats
Dog or cat food
Rolls of potty bags

Wash and completely dry the glass bowls and or vases that you have decided to use for your decorations.Open bags of treats and bones and pour each type into its own container.
For bowls you are filling with smaller bags of treats or to split a bag of treats or food between multiple vessels fill the bottom with rolls of potty bags! The potty bags will help the treats sit higher and will be giving the shelter something that they need especially when taking the animals out to adoption events. Make sure collars are buckled and slide down on vases or bowls. You can adjust as necessary once the collar is sitting where you would like it to be but don’t make it too tight or you will risk shattering the glass. Once you have a bunch of different containers created place them around your house among your other decorations and wait for friends and family to ask why you decorated with dog and cat treats. You can respond instead of cut flowers that you will have to throw away in a week or so you have decided to decorate with something that will help shelter pets in your area. Now not only are you helping but you reminded friends and family in a fun way not to forget about shelter pets.

Make sure that when decorating you place the filled bowls high enough that your dog or cat cannot get to them. You might notice your pets eying the new “treat” dishes all over the house for about a day but they will quickly forget about them if you ignore them and treat them like any other decoration.

  1. These are too cute! My challenge would be keeping my crew from trying to get at them! Very festive! As a former shelter employee…our shelter is near and dear to me. Just about anything can be used by the shelter, cleaning and laundry supplies, toys, towels, beds you name it….they can use it!
