Ukraine Accused of Killing Stray Dogs Ahead of 2012 Euro Cup

Both activist and regular everyday people are claiming that government agents are being paid to kill stray dogs in very inhumane ways. Supposedly they are using poisoned meat and injections to kill the dogs in the middle of the streets. The dogs are poisoned and tfor hours before succumbing to whatever they have been given,  Animal welfare groups accuse Ukrainian authorities of using illegal and inhumane methods of killing stray dogs that cause long, agonizing deaths. They say dogs are often poisoned or injected with banned substances as officials rush to clear streets ahead of the Euro 2012 soccer championship next summer.

Euro 2012 organizers deny any involvement in a stray eradication campaign. According to government official use humane methods to trap, house, and kill stray dogs. But according to reports dogs picked up from the street are put in crates too small for their size and given no light and minimal food and water. While it is acknowledged by rescue organizations that very few people in the Ukraine will adopt dogs from the pound they don’t feel the animals should suffer and should be euthanized and not slowly starved or dehydrated to death.

Igor Furda, an animal control official at the Kharkiv State Veterinary Academy, insisted the concerns were groundless. “If the dog is going to be euthanized, does it matter what cage it is kept in?” he asked.

Figures and estimates provided to The Associated Press by authorities in the Euro 2012 host cities of Kiev, Donetsk, Kharkiv and Lviv show more than 9,000 dogs have been put to death over the past year. Animal protection groups believe the number is far  much higher

  2. It is interesting that in the majority of European stray dogs are absent. In Ukraine there is a law “On protection of animals against cruelty”. It is legally prohibited to kill stray dogs by inhumane methods. Those who disseminate rumors about stray dogs allegedly killed by inhumane methods in Ukraine are provocateurs and interested to earn money on that. Think about this
