Woman Punches Bear in Face to Save Her Dog

A Juneau Alaska resident said she hit a Black Bear in the face Sunday night to save the life of her dachshund, Fudge. She said she discovered the bear crouched down, clutching Fudge in its paws and biting the back of the dog’s neck. When she realized what was happening she started screaming and something took over where she ran up to the bear and hit it in the face. The Bear let go of her dog allowing her to snatch up her dog while her boyfriend somehow scared the bear away.

Brook Collins who has lived in Juneau most of her life, said she is accustomed to bears and knows how to take precautions around them. She also knew about this particular bear before Sunday’s attack because it has been hanging around the neighborhood. Unfortunately this is the one time when for whatever reason Fudge ran out the door before anyone could check to make sure the area was clear of bears. Fudge has chased bears off the property in past summers but has never been attacked by one. Whether Fudge was running out to protect the family from the bear or if she just wanted to chase it off no one really knows.

Bear encounters are on the rise this year due to the lack of a berry crop – a key food group. Precautions are being taken to try and keep the bears off of residential properties but so far it has not worked. In fact authorities are pretty sure that the bear that grabbed up Fudge the Dog was back for a visit on garbage day to see if it could find any food.

Are you diligent in keeping away the wildlife that could harm your pets? What precautions do you and your family have in place?

  1. Holy crap, this is amazing. I’m so glad that the story ends well! Most people would say she’s crazy for putting herself in danger, but having a pet is like having a child. It’s your responsibility to protect them and keep them safe, they are a part of the family. With my small dog Jake, I’ve jumped in the middle of a dog fight and flattened a big Chow to protect my dog, and I would do it again. After all, if they are so loyal and willing to protect their family, we should do the same. Thanks for sharing this. I enjoy a happy ending šŸ™‚

  2. A local guy in Candler NC did the same – punched the bear in his face to rescue his dog – scary that this is happening.
