Dog of Fallen Police Officer to Retire and Live with Family

Ace was the K-9 partner of Officer Jeffrey Yaslowitz, who was murdered last January. Shortly after officer Yaslowitz death the St. Petersburg Police Department made the determination that at 5 years old Ace was too old to start his career over with a new officer which would mean months of training before he could be back on the street. It would also mean that if he was put with a new handler nto only would the Yaslowitz family have lost their father and husband but his dog which they had become very attached to over the years. They asked if the family would keep Ace if he were retired early as their family pet

The couple’s three children had already decided even before it was their decision to make. The children wanted Ace to stay. Once the decision was made the police force sent their K-9 trainer to meet with the family and teach them how to control Ace after all he was not used to being a family pet he was used to going out into the field and working cases going after bad guys and helping in police investigations. Ace is high energy and needs to be worked hard each day. So with the help of the trainer and fellow K-9 officers the family learned how to communicate with Ace to keep him happy and his mind healthy. The family is even hoping to help Ace calm down enough so that he can live inside with the other family dog and truly finally become part of the family. There is still a bit of red tape that needs to be taken care of but the family hopes that by this weekend they will officially have a new family member and constant reminder of the father and husband that they lost.
