Piper the Puppy is the newest and cutest disaster relief item created by the Dallas Red Cross and currently being tested in Dallas, Texas and Tampa Florida. Donate a Piper yourself or go in with a group.
How Piper the Puppy Works
- You make a $100 donation to the American Red Cross-Dallas Area Chapter or Tampa Area.
- The Red Cross writes your name on Piper’s paw and then places him on one of our Disaster Relief Vehicles
- Volunteers hand out your “Piper the Puppy” to a child affected by a disaster.
- An alert is sent to you when your Piper has been distributed
Once you get the alert you know that your gift of a small stuffed animal will be bringing comfort to a scared child who has lost everything in a home fire or natural disaster. A child who probably just lost all of their stuffed animals and other comfort items. Plus you get the alert that your child is being comforted by “Piper the Puppy”, you know that your $100 gift truly turns compassion into action. Your gift will provide shelter, three meals, a cot, two blankets and basic hygiene items for one day to someone who loses everything when their home is destroyed by a disaster.
I think the program needs to expand to all American Red Cross Disaster Relief causes. Imagine if there where Piper’s immediately available for the children and families who lost everything in the Earthquake and Tsunami in March or if they were available for the children whose homes blew away in the Tornado. Imagine what it would mean to those families to know that someone cares about their children during this horrible time in their lives. To know that people don’t view their family as a number or statistic.
