Mother Dog and Puppies Owe Their Lives to Walking Trio

Lisa Beattie exercises each day in Cherryville by going on a walk with a friend and her sister-in-law. The animal lovers have made a few four-legged friends along their route, adapting their routine to bring dog treats and show some attention to three dogs who spend their days chained up outside. The women noticed one of the dogs struggling in labor Monday, they took the dog to a veterinarian where she gave birth via Cesarian section to six puppies. “She would’ve been dead. There’s no way that dog could’ve had these puppies,” said Beattie.

Wood, Beattie and Sandy Hamrick befriended the dog, Sweet Pea, during their walks. In addition to giving her milk bones, the women delivered a 15-pound bag of food to the dog’s owners when they found out they had no money to buy it. Prior to Monday, the women didn’t realize just how much care the dog was lacking. And now the women are having a hard time deciding whether or not the owners should regain custody of their pet. Sweet Pea the new momma of 6 is caring for her puppies at the home of one of the women. They just couldn’t put her back outside chained to a tree while she was caring for newborns.

Covering the cost of the C-section ran just more than $550 and included getting her spayed after the procedure. “These people want this dog back, but she didn’t have her rabies, she didn’t have her distemper. She had nothing. She had a leash and a collar and was tied to a tree,” said Beattie. The dog’s owners already expressed an interest in not only getting Sweet Pea back but one of her female puppies too.

Despite Sweet Pea’s lackluster life, she has always shown joy, said Beattie. “No matter what her life is like, she’s still a happy dog,” said Beattie. “If she got fed, fine, if she didn’t she was still happy.”

What kind women. Thank goodness they happened along and could help that sweet dog and her pups…

  3. Great post the day before Mother's Day. I feel thankful these women were watchful and kind. Have to say I hope that the owners do not get their dog back, nor any puppies!

  4. that's a nice story just in time for Mother's Day

  5. some awesome photos.

  6. Oh wow. Stopped by on the blogger hop and read the story. What a sad situation that dog was in. I just can't quite wrap my head around people who love their dog enough to tie her outside all day. I get the fact that she didn't have her shots and that they didn't have enough food for her – people are suffering hard times all over, but to then want her back AND a puppy? Now that's just pure stupidity and lack of common sense.

I am grateful the ladies saved the mother and her pups. I don't envy them their situation. How do you give them back to the owners? How do you not from a legal perspective? Ugh!

  7. Wow, what a story! I'm so torn- obviously the owners cannot provide care for their dog, and shouldn't have her back. They certainly shouldn't get a puppy on top of that. But technically, the women can't simply steal the dog and puppies either. I hope the owners realize that their dog has an opportunity to receive a better life, and let her go. Regardless, I'm so glad to hear that people can care so much to help a dog in need!

  8. Hi there! Thank you for hosting. I’m a new follower without pix to share today… unless you head toward the bottom of my sidebar. My 2 Siamese are pictured there. Hi Y'all,

What wonderful caring ladies to care so much for another pawed one! Plus being able to foot the bill for the mommy dog.

Hope those ladies can get the proper authorities involved so those people can't get the dogs back.

Thanks for another great Saturday Blog Hop!

    Y'all come by now,

  10. What a great story esp on mothers day weekend 🙂

  11. Art and Sew Forth says

This is such a happy-sad article. I am thrilled she was found and cared for and the pups are doing well. But I hope she can go to another home after this. What a wonderful, caring group of ladies!!

  12. Great story, Felissa!

  13. Thank Felissa for sharing a great story. As much as we all are pet owners and having tons of pets around can be cool. We must love pets enough to know when we have taken on more than we can handle. I believe that folks should consider the full cost of having a pet before taking them on. Nothing gets to me more than a pet being neglected and the pet owner saying they love them. Even if your life changes there are programs that help until you can get on your feet again.

  14. awww, what a bittersweet story. At least it looks like the puppies might have a chance for a better life. If you look at the link Felissa posted at the bottom of the story, there's contact info for possibly adopting one of the pups. Cherryville is kind of near Charlotte, NC in case anyone in the area is looking to adopt!

Thanks for sharing this story, Felissa. It's such a good one, even though it's both sad and happy at the same time.
    Your pals,
    Diane and Cosmo

  15. Wishing the mom and pups a better life ahead.
    thanks for the story!

Sweet Pea is indeed a survivor and she looks like a proud mom next to her six pups. Hopefully their lives will only get better from now onwards with the compassion of Wood, Beattie, and Sandy!

  17. What wonderful women for taking care of the sweet girl and her pups. Some people should not be dog owners. Can't believe how negligent the “owners' were. How awful.

Thank you for visiting my blog today and connecting with me! Appreciate it! 🙂
