On the Morning of May 18th, 2011 a family noticed  a deer in their yard that appeared to be frantically looking for something in the rocks that form a wall on property line in Brush Prairie, WA. Neighbors got together and went outside to figure out what was going on they didn’t see anything but the deer wouldn’t leave our yard. Everyone went home but the deer kept running around the yards and wouldn’t leave.

They families went back out to the area the deer was concentrating on and could hear a baby fawn crying in the rocks. They moved some of the rocks and smaller boulders and saw baby fawn’s face in the rocks. The fawn had fallen in our crawled in through one of the gaps and became trapped. The larger boulders were too heavy to move and the neighbors were worried didn’t want that by trying to move them that the rocks would cave in on the baby deer.

They called their local fire department Clark County Fire District 3. As the crew was working to free the fawn you can hear its cries and then the mommy deer starts to circle the yards frantic for her baby. Its clear she is in distress but she stays clear of the people around her baby trying to help rescue it she must have known everyone was trying to help.

The Fire Department was able to cut some rocks and move them out of the way and with the jaws of life they were able to create an opening in the rocks  large enough to be able to reach in a pull the baby fawn out and reunited it with its momma. The fawn ran off into the trees and its momma quickly found it and started nursing the baby.

*For all of our city folk readers those in the country want you to know not to go near injured or frightened deer because they are very powerful and can seriously or hurt or kill someone by kicking them who tries to help. They say even if you find an injured deer or hit one while driving to stay in your car and call local authorities who will come out and take care of the situation.

Thank you to Yvonne DiVita at BlogPaws for letting us know about this rescue.
