Chew toys weren’t enough Indiana needed something more

What kinds of things do you let your dogs and cats try? Are they allowed people food or just food made special for dogs and cats? Have you ever considered letting them try something new? Here are some of the things we tried when the normal solutions weren’t working for us.

Puppy Teething

How about instead of always giving your teething puppy chew bones and toys why not let them chew on carrots? Little breed puppies can have baby carrots and bigger teething puppies can had a regular sized carrot. It gives them something fun to chew that isn’t destructive and ensures that they are getting the vitamins they need to continue to grow big and strong. Indiana was a shark when she was a puppy she wanted to chew my hands and feet 24 hours a day. That was until the trainer for puppy socialization class told me to try baby carrots. It was like I had a whole new puppy. All of a sudden Indiana was a different puppy starting from her first carrot stick. My hand was no longer the best chew toy in town baby carrots was where it was at.

E showing L how to give Indiana a treat

Puppy Training
After we got the teething problem under control we ran head first into another problem. All of my friends had toddlers who wanted to play with Davinia and Indiana. We mastered the gentle command pretty easily which meant my friends trusted the girls to take treats from their children. That was until one day I gave one of the little girls a few pieces of kibble to give to Indiana and Davinia.  It was going really well like usual until the little girl put the “cookie” into her mouth and her mom freaked out.

I knew that I had to find something the girls could have at least several pieces of that would also be safe for their admirers. I went to the food store and checked out the baby section and saw that there were these little cereal pieces that were the right stage for all the toddlers that were low in calorie and just the right size to train Indiana. So instead of showing up to puppy socialization with cut up hot dogs or a little baggie full of kibble we showed up with a plastic container full of toddler cereal stars. The kids in the neighborhood would know they could always ask me for cookies for the girls sometimes the girls got them and sometimes my friends children ate them but I never again encountered a mortified mommy because their baby ate a dog treat. Sometimes we even traded flavors since the brand we used came in several flavors.

Summer Playtime
The winter is over and the summer rolls around and we are out during the weekend at confirmation shows in the sun.We get home at the end of the day tired and drained (its hard work being pretty just kidding Indiana has to say hello to everyone and make sure they acknowledge her). We would get home and I would cuddle up with Indiana to take a nap. When we woke up we had a special treat of cut up water melon pieces or honeydew. Davinia and Indiana love fruit and this was a special treat especially after a long day of driving and being out in the sun. Davinia and Indiana aren’t fans of ice cubes so this was a great way for them to have something cooling and special.

Is there a time that you had to change your normal routine because it just wasn’t working? What did you find that helped solve the problem?
