Parcel Puppy: Woman Tries to Ship Puppy via USPS Priority Mail

A 39-year-old Stacey Champion has been charged with cruelty to animals after she allegedly tried to post a puppy to a relative from Minnesota to Georgia via USPS Priority Mail. Last week Stacey Champion sealed the dog, called Guess into a cardboard box with no airholes no food or water or place to go potty and was only caught when the cardboard box it fell off the counter when she was trying to pay for priority postage. ‘At that point, the clerk and supervisor could hear a sound like panting coming from inside the box.’ Mrs Dodge added: ‘They could hear it in the box, they opened the box and discovered a live puppy on there with no food or water.’

The dog, a male four-month-old Schnauzer, has been taken into care while a decision is made by authorities whether or not it should be allowed to be handed back to the Minnesota woman. ‘Clearly there wasn’t a whole lot of thought that went into this,’ said Angela Dodge of the Minneapolis Police Department in a CBS Minnesota news report of Champion’s effort to post the dog from Minnesota to Georgia.

‘A puppy is a definite no-no,’ said Pete Nowacki with the U.S. Postal Service.

Mrs Champion, who had paid $22 for Guess to be posted, wanted to transport the puppy quickly and was mailed using two-day priority. According to officials, she was sending the dog by mail to a relative. ‘The notion of putting a puppy in a box, putting them on a plane with no food, no water, no place to do their business, it’s not going to work,’ said Mr Nowacki.

‘The puppy is doing fine. Champion has until Friday to make an appeal to animal control to get the puppy back. If animal controls says she can’t have the puppy back, it will go up for adoption.’ The box had been wrapped, completely, sealing the air holes. If the parcel had been airlifted – as was planned – and transported in an airplane’s unheated, non-pressurised cargo hold, the dog would almost certainly have died.

Mrs Champion was charged with animal cruelty. She has 10 days from being cited to appeal. If she declines or loses her appeal, Guess would go up for adoption.

  1. I agree with Shellie, what an idiot! I cannot even being to believe that anyone thinks that would be ok. It's NOT! If I were the people deciding whether or not she gets to keep the puppy, it would be very easy, she would NOT get to keep Guess. What person would even think it would be ok to send a puppy, or a live breathing animal, through the mail! If she doens't have the sense to even deliver her puppy to his new owner properly, or the people getting the dog, if they knew she was sending him through the mail, do NOT deserve to have any pets whatsoever! What is wrong with some people today, I know I'm sounding mean but I love animals! People have common sense and yet they still don't care. PLEASE take Guess and any other pets she has away from her and put them into homes with responsible people who will love them!!!

Whay an IDIOT! I hope they give that puppy to a DESERVING home. That lady has no right to have a pet whatsoever.

  3. Yep I agree. Hard to believe anyone would think it is ok to put an animal in a box with no air holes for even a few hours much less two days.

I had no words when I saw this one on the news this morning and…..nope….still no words can describe just how stupid this is! I just shake my head in disbelief.

    beyond disturbing

  6. Some people are just complete idiots. I hope they don't give the dog back to her because she clearly doesn't know how to handle a dog. That poor puppy must have been scared.

    I can't believe some people.
