Naked K9 and Small Dog Rescue

This is a friend’s Rescue Group and I offered to do a courtesy post to help bring awareness to her brand new rescue.

From the Founder of Naked K9 and Small Dog Rescue

My name is Suzanne Yancey I live in the mid West and work full time at an apparel manufacturing company.  Along with my rescue work I foster refugee children without families, travel, sew and photography, well maybe it is more like I just can find a Kodak moment anywhere.

At times it can be difficult with all the kids and dogs but the dogs have given my foster kids an new avenue for the own recoveries and the kids help the dogs, they  benefit from the  socialization and love that only kids can bring. I find my strength in this and would not change a thing.

I am one of the founders of Naked K9 and small dog rescue.  I was dragged into rescue kicking and screaming about 6 or 7 years ago.  It was never my intention to do rescue just wanted to adopt a couple of Chinese Crested dogs. The short of the story is I fell passionately committed to rescue.  I have worked with, fostered and rehomed  about 60 plus dogs in that time.  I have had some difficult dogs that came out of mills to some wonderful no problem owner turn in dogs.  I found that every dog no matter what its past was, has spirit to live and be happy. I know that every dog has such greatness inside and given a chance can teach all of us something.

My belief in this was a challenge this past Dec. when I took in a senior dog that by the time I got him had given up on life.  I new nothing of his past only that he and two other seniors no one wanted where left in a shelter with a very shaky future.  He had such bad skin infection that his neck had what appeared to be fat ring but was in fact the  result of a long term infection he smelled so bad, no matter how much I washed him.  The vet was successful at clearing up the infection after a couple of months, and the smell finally went away but I worried that I had not done him any favors by saving him. He would just sit in his kennel, that the door was always open to and never cared about a thing  He has since then showed me that he did want to live and has become such a wonderful little boy.  He is happy and runs with the others he does have arthritis but it does not appear to bother him he does not jump but as of late I have seen him get on the couch which makes me very happy to see. One of my younger dogs play with him and they snuggle together.  His zest for life is wonderful and I only hope I can find him a home to enjoy for test of his life.

I have 6 dogs of my own and currently have 5 fosters.  I started out with my first small dog a Toy Fox Terrier, it took a couple of years to down size my brain because I always had Great Danes and Retrievers, but searching for a companion for TFT  I found the Chinese Crested and have been in love with the breed ever since.

It did not take long before I realized how much clothing for these little naked dogs was costing me so I dragged out the sewing machine blew off the dust and started honing the sewing  skills. I work for a company that makes cold weather clothing and found that the scraps generated there was a great benefit because I could make jammies for my dogs out of them.  I then made jammies for the fosters that always come into rescue with only their birthdays suits which in Michigan did not offer much warmth.  I passed jammies on to others that had fosters that needed cloths and word spread and I became the Jammie lady and have been donating all the funds generated to dog rescue since.  I now use it to fund the Naked K9 rescue.

Naked K9 has 6 reps in 5 states.  We started the group last year out of our love for the Chinese Crested and a larger need for more help in the rescue world.

Naked K9 and small dog rescue has taken in 13 dogs and adopted out 4 since Dec. 09.
The need is much greater than there are rescues.  We have not been able to take in all the dogs that we have been asked to help.  It saddens me to say no but we are so small at this time with limited foster homes and funds to help we are not able to help them all.
