The photo that started circulating the internet this week of a monkey supposedly rescuing a puppy from an accidental explosion at a Chinese Factory and then re-attributed to being a monkey saving a puppy from the floods in Thailand is actually a 5 year old picture of a monkey stealing a puppy. While it would be a heartwarming story if either of the scenarios above had occurred and not completely out of the realm of possibility that is not what happened n this picture. There are tons of videos on Youtube to prove the bond between the two species exists.
It is true that monkeys and dogs can bond and form a very strong relationship there is a whole other side to what kind of relationship can take place. One where monkeys steal young puppies from their mothers and bring them into their circle to protect the group. The puppies are taken when they are very youngand raised to be a part of the monkey family unit. The dog as it matures offers protection to the monkeys and in turn the monkeys share their food with the dogs. They do care for the puppies that they take but the relationship begins very violently. That’s not to say that once secure within the family unit the puppies are harmed the monkeys do mother the puppy along with their own babies. It is just a traumatic start to a lifelong relationship as can be seen in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7I7-SADai3Y.
Editors Update 5/8/2013: We posted this story October 21, 2011 when the photo was circulating all over the (dog world) internet saying how amazing it was that this monkey was saving this puppy. After researching the picture we came to the conclusion that it was a hoax and was not even a recent picture. This post was meant as commentary on something that was spreading around the internet which was false. A post that put the false rumors around a single incident to rest. Since that time we have seen numerous mentions of this same monkey “rescuing” the same puppy from all sorts of perils from Thailand to India to the Philippines anytime there is a natural disaster like massive flooding or a typhoon or even a fire. There is no way we could have known how often the same picture would crop up from news outlets around the world or why this keeps occurring. This was commentary on a single incident of the spread of this picture of the monkey “rescuing” this dog and nothing more.
According to Wedding and Events Photographer Dani Weiss this monkey was actually tied up and running back and forth with the puppy in its arms and not stealing the puppy. In a photo album on their website labeled Southeast Asia you will find this picture and a second picture of what looks to be the same monkey holding the leg of the same puppy.
However if you are looking for someone to take a family portrait or wedding pictures that include your 4 legged family members it looks like Dani will gladly help you out. Dani according to the website is based in Seattle but willing to travel to help capture your special events.
