Why Does Your Puppy Need Puppy Socialization Class

Have you ever wondered why puppies need a socialization class? It’s important to have your puppy go through puppy socialization classes at the right time period in their lives. As you know, socializing a puppy can take some hard work.

#1. Positive Reinforcement is what you will learn in Puppy Socialization Class

Puppies have a lot to learn in those first few months of their life. Anywhere after the age of 16 weeks when your puppy can become fully vaccinated is a great time to start them in a Puppy Socialization class. Puppies need to have boundaries and expectations put into place to help them lead a happy and healthy life and that is exactly what takes place at Puppy School. You will learn the basics but more important your puppy will be exposed to other dogs of all shapes and sizes. When Indiana went to Puppy Socialization she was the smallest and youngest dog in the class by far. Many of the dogs enrolled were older dogs and had never been to a class like this or were older puppies and their families were at the end of their leash in how to help their new dog become a functioning member of the family.

#2. Proper Training – is what is taught at Puppy Socialization Class

If you have ever owned a puppy before, it can be tough to know how to get them to sit or even listen to you. Puppy socialization classes can help learn proper training techniques to help them grow into an adult. The lessons you and your puppy learn here will help you and your puppy live a happy life together. You are laying the groundwork for your puppy’s lifetime. Think of it like preschool for children sure you can teach them at home but they miss out on the interaction they have with other children who are not a part of their family. They miss out on lessons like getting along with others, playing nicely, saying hello, and understanding how to interact with others that are different.

#3. Behavior Help – in Puppy Socialization Class

There are puppies that have some major behavior issues that as a puppy might be cute or even funny. However as your puppy grows up, you don’t want these behavior issues to continue or to get worse. Puppy socialization classes will help give your puppy that sense of direction he or she needs to understand these behaviors are not acceptable. You will also learn how to redirect these bad behaviors so that you can stop them as they start. The lessons you learn in Puppy Socialization will stay with you and your puppy through their lifetime.

#4. Exposure to Other Humans and Dogs is what you will find in Puppy Socialization Class

If your dog is never around other humans or dogs, how will he/she know how to act around them? Puppy socialization classes are the perfect opportunity to expose your puppy to others humans and dogs. And everyone is exposed to each other in a safe environment, so you don’t need to feel uneasy about the situation. Sure you can Socialize at the dog park but your puppy likely does not have the skills it needs in order to interact appropriately with the other dogs there.

#5. Puppy Socialization Class Give Your Puppy Exposure to a New Environment

It’s unlikely that your dog is going to spend the next 10-15 years just sitting in your living room with you. One reason puppy socialization classes are so important is that they help expose your puppy to different environments, so they are less likely to be afraid or scared when they come in contact with a new location situation. One of the biggest lessons we learned in Puppy Socialization class was walking on different surfaces. That might seems strange but it has served us well over the years. While other dogs might go around the object or walk funny over it Indiana just walks like there is nothing wrong. Davinia is the same way.

The lessons learned in Puppy Socialization class will serve your puppy and your family for years to come They will lay the foundation for a happy healthy dog and allow you to continue on with Obedience training, or agility training, or any other dog sport you can think of. The groundwork is there you just have to build on it.

  1. Bailie went to puppy kindergarten. She learned a bit about being patient, waiting to play, working for rewards. It was a nice class for a pup who is too young for obedience 1.

  2. This is a great article. So many people forget that no matter how sweet their puppy is, it won’t magically know how to interact with other animals and people. It has to learn those things.

  3. Nice article, puppy training is so important as it sets the foundation for a well behaved dog.

  4. I saw a show where people took their pets to a guy who trained them. One of the things he did was take them to new environments. With the skitterish dogs he took them with a dog that wasn’t skitterish. It so worked like a charm and reformed the skittery pup. 🙂

  5. These are great reasons! My brother has a dog, and he brought him from out of town to a local dog park in my area. He was so well trained from his classes that he made friends with the other dogs right away.

  17. I grew up with dogs, but never considered all of the work that goes into making them part of the family. I’ll reference this when we are ready to adopt.

  18. We adopted a dog that needs socialization. She seems ok with other dogs but haven’t tried it a lot.

  20. We are lucky that our most recent dog is very social (we got him as a 2-year-old). I wish our last dog had more socialization because he was extremely dog aggressive and it was hard to “fix” after he was already a few years old.

  21. My dog went to puppy socialization class and did such a great job! In her old age, she’s gotten grumpy and needs to get back to basics!

  34. this is so true! I especially believe in socializing little dogs that are typically the ones that don’t get a lot of socializing! I have a little dog, weighs 2 tiny pounds, but he is feisty and aggressive to anyone he is not used to, so we are still socializing, even though he isn’t too big of a fan of anyone! Thanks for sharing! Very useful information here.
