Tips for Finding the Perfect Veterinarian

1. Call your local animal shelter.
Animal shelters utilize vets often, so call your local shelter and see if they have one they can recommend. They may be able to give you a few names, and the vet may even compensate the shelter for referring you to him which is nice!

2. Ask other pet parents.
Ask your other friends who have pets to see who they recommend. These are also the people who are most likely to give you honest feedback about quality of service and prices. Talk to your friends and begin forming a list of potential vets. Many practices have multiple Veterinarians so make sure that you find out specifically which vet to book your appointment with. Sometimes it doesn’t matter and everyone is equally as wonderful but oftentimes there is a vet that shines above the others for your friend and their dogs.

3. Check out Angie’s List
Angie’s List at www.angieslist.com gives honest reviews on vets and includes lots of helpful information. Check it out to see if you can find a vet in your area that is recommended and gets quality and consistent reviews.

4. Ask your Boarding Facility
They always have a vet they work most closely with. Not only will you get a good recommendation but you will have the peace of mind that when you do go away you know that if something happens the vet they will be seen by is also their regular vet. Boarding facilities that want your business will not send you to a poor quality vet because they know the wrong recommendation will also have your patronage of their facility disappear.

5. Do a walk through.
Once you think you have found the perfect vet, do an office walk through. See how you feel about the environment, staff, and doctor. Simply pop in during business hours, tell them you are a potential client, and ask if you can just check the place out. Chances are they will be happy to help you.

6. Give it a trial run.
You are never obligated to stay with a vet. Do a trial run and if it is a good fit, stay. If it is not, leave! Don’t quit looking until you have found the perfect fit.

Finding the Perfect Veterinarian can be as nerve wracking as finding the perfect doctor for your newborn baby but it doesn’t have to be if you take a step back and follow these 6 tips.

  2. Thanks for sharing this! I agree that it is important to have a good veterinarian, especially since they are in charge of your pet’s health. However, I had no idea that the animal shelter would be able to give a reference of good local vets. I’ll definitely try doing that and see if I get any recommendations!

  3. These are some really great tips! I moved to a new area in a new state about a month ago, and it was only the other day that I would need to find a new vet for my two dogs. I had never thought about calling the animal shelter, that is a really good idea. Thanks so mch, you may have saved me a lot of work!
