How to Create an Emergency Pet Fund

We have discussed having money set aside to pay for vet bills in order to keep your dogs or cats healthy. We have also told you that we receive countless requests throughout the year from people all over the world to help people pay for their dog’s vet bills. While we know all too well emergencies happen that are no faut of your own it is important to have money set aside to cover the unexpected. In the future, you may find yourself facing some unexpected pet expenses. This can be vet bills, medicinal bills, or the latest pet gadget that your dog seems to benefit from. Such bills can be pricey, and can even set you back several hundred dollars. Instead of breaking your budget and draining your bank account, why not create an emergency pet fund? Creating an emergency pet fund can be quite easy, so take a peek below at how to create your own.

1. Save your change.
Each time you go to the store and get change back, throw it in a jar. Change adds up quickly and you will hardly miss it. Once the jar is full, cash it in for cash for your emergency pet fund. Most banks have the coin cashing machines which make the job easy.

2. Hold a yearly yard sale.
Hold a yard sale each spring or summer and then save the money for your emergency fund. This is a great way to get rid of clutter while setting aside some money at the same time.

3. Set aside a percentage of your paycheck.
Set aside anywhere from 3%-5% of your weekly paycheck to use for pet emergencies. Take this money and put it directly into another account so you never even miss it. You can also see if your spouse will match this percentage with his or her own paycheck. many bank accounts come with a Savings Account tied directly to it where the bank will automatically deduct an amount you specify and transfer it into the other account. Even $5 or $10 each paycheck does add up over time especially if you only use the money in the account in an emergency.

4. Skip one coffee per week.
Skip one coffee drink or bakery treat a week and save the cash instead. This is a simple way to save about $5 a week! That $5 a week will add up and come in handy when the need arises.

5. Pet sit.
Why not offer to sit for pets or even walk a pet or two a week for cash? This cash can then be used for emergency needs as they arise. This is a fun way to spend time with other dogs while still saving for this important fund.

There you have it! See how easy it can be to create an emergency fund for your dog? Give these tips a try, you will be so glad you did.

  2. Great post. It’s difficult when faced with a pet emergency and you have to wonder where the money is going to come from. Pet care should be part of the household budget.
