Simple Ways to Reward Your Dog

Are you trying to teach your dog to not jump on strangers, use their crate, or go potty outside? It seems as though no matter what age they are, we are always trying to teach our dogs new tricks. Rewards typically play a big part in training your dog, however you may be unclear on exactly how to do this. Take a look below at simple ways to reward your dog and encourage the behaviors you desire.
1. Play dates.
A fun and easy way to reward your dog is to allow some playtime with other pups. Arrange for play groups (even if they are just an hour long) to reward your dog when he is playing nicely and demonstrating positive behaviors.
2. Treats.
This may seem like the first choice of all dog owners, but there are lots of ways to treat your dog without actually opening up a box of biscuits. A little peanut butter on a spoon or a little pureed pumpkin are great treats.
3. Personal attention.
Reward your dog by giving him some personal attention. This can be 30 minutes you set aside to do nothing but pet and praise him. Allow for no interruptions. Your dog will devour this personal attention and be putty in your hands.
4. Outdoor time.
Even if it is just a brisk walk to the end of the block, never underestimate the power of a little fresh air.
5. Enjoy a game or two.
Tug of war or fetch are fun and simple games and a great way to reward your dog. You can play tug indoors if weather is not allowing you to get out. Indulge in one of these games the next time your dog demonstrates praise worthy behavior.
See how easy it is to treat your dog? Give some of these simple incentives a try the next time your pup needs some praise and reward!

One of the favorites around here is some cuddle time – we curl up on the couch together. Or in Gracie’s case, she climbs into my lap and squishes me 🙂

Thanks for sharing these – we do all of these things but it seems like treats work the best when we are asking anything of them, haha.

I love the tip about spending extra time with your pet. They appreciate that one on one just as anyone would. I give peanut butter just for the hilarity of the long tongue action she has!
