Puppy Proofing – 7 Items to Hide from Your Puppy

If you are a new and proud puppy parent, you probably have been busy puppy proofing your home. While you are at it, you will want to make note of these 7 items to hide. These 7 items can pose safety issues to your new pup and should be avoided. Take a look below at 7 common household items you will want to put up before puppy comes home.

Puppy Proofing 7 Items to Hide from Your Puppy

1. Clothing items.
Small clothing items such as socks, underwear, and kids clothing can all pose choking hazards. Make sure the whole family is in the habit of putting these items away so your pup does not try to chew and ingest them.

2. Remote controls.
Now is the time to get out of the habit of leaving your remote out. In no time flat your puppy can chew it in half, not only ruining your remote but ingesting plastic buttons in the process. Be safe and keep the remote on top of the TV when not in use.

3. Plants.
If you have any live plants, be sure they are up high so nosey pups aren’t trying to pull them down. Not only will it create a muddy mess, but some plants are poisonous to dogs. Avoid any emergencies by placing plants up high or removing them all together.

4. Cleaning products.
Cleaning products are colorful and sometimes even sweet tasting, so they may be appealing to dogs. The chemicals in them however can be quite dangerous. Keep all cleaning products locked up, or switch to chemical free and natural products instead.

5. Electrical cords.
Cords seem like a fun toy to pups, but can pose an electrocution risk as well as fire hazard if played with. Keep all cords tied up so your dog can’t play with them. It will keep your entire household safer.

6. Toys.
Kid’s toys are colorful, make noise, and are often small and easy to grab. Therefore, a new puppy will feel compelled to play with them. Make sure your child knows to clean up his toys when done, or your pup is likely to destroy them in seconds while possibly ingesting some harmful parts.

7. Books.
Nothing gets a puppy excited like shredding paper. Leave your favorite book out and your puppy may go to town. Be sure all books are kept up high so your dog is not tempted to “read them” not only destroying your book but ingesting paper as well.

Do a sweep of your house daily and make sure these items are out of your puppy’s sight. It is an easy way to avoid emergencies as well as keep your belongings in one piece.

  2. We have a puppy. She is really well behaved around the house, the only thing she loves to steal is socks and underwear, but she is very proud of her crimes so she parades it past Mom every time and has it removed from her mouth!

  3. Shoes, although technically they are clothing items. Door mats and throw rugs are also favorite things for a puppy to chew.
