DIY Natural Carpet Cleaner Scented with Basil

With all of the snow and rain the country has seen the past week I thought now would be the perfect time to share a Natural Carpet Cleaner. All of those muddy boot and paw prints going back and forth even if everyone takes their shoes off before stepping on the carpet chances are they are still getting dirty. Even though your carpets are dirty you might be hesitant to try and clean them right now because you can’t open the windows to ventilate the house from the harsh chemicals because it is just too cold outside. Well now you don’t have to worry this natural carpet cleaner is safe, simple to make, and easy to use. You might even have the ingredients on hand already. Freshen up your home without harming your children or pets. If you have cats you will want to do one room at a time keeping the cats out of the room you are cleaning until you can vacuum up the carpet cleaner. Cats are more sensitive to essential oils then dogs and I would want you to take any chances.

If you have pets or just heavy household traffic, chances are your carpets and rugs take a beating. Carpets can be tough to freshen up, and chances are you may think your only options are chemical filled products. Well the good news is you do have an alternative solution. You can make your own natural carpet cleaning powder for less money and using less harsh chemicals. You only need a few supplies, so take a look below at how easy it is to whip up a batch of your own. You can be enjoying fresh and clean carpets in no time.

Supplies needed:
1 cup of baking soda
3-5 drops of an essential oil of your choice. We used lavender for ours.
1 tablespoon of dried basil flakes (You can buy dried basil flakes or dry your own fresh sprigs of basil if you wish. Either way works great and still gives you that yummy basil scent.)
Air tight jar with lid

You can double this recipe if you wish to cover a larger area. This recipe cleans a 10×12 or so area, so you can adapt the recipe in order to clean the rooms or areas you need to address. You can of course omit the essential oils if you wish, or use a scent other than lavender. Experiment with various scents and have fun finding a mixture that works for you and your tastes.

Directions:
1. Mix all of the ingredients in a bowl and stir well.
2. Place the mixture in an air tight jar with lid. You do not want moisture to get the mixture as it will harden it and cause clumping.

When you are ready to use your natural basil carpet cleaner, simply sprinkle it generously on the area that needs cleaning. Test a small patch of carpeting before using this product just to be sure the fibers do not have a strange reaction to it. The chances of this are unlikely but it is worth checking. Allow the powder to sit for up to 30 minutes. The baking soda will absorb stain and odors while the oils and basil will release a fresh scent. After 30 minutes, vacuum the powder until it is no longer visible. Repeat if needed.

DIY All Natural Carpet Cleaner Safe to Use Around Your Pets

Use your natural basil carpet cleaner as often as needed to freshen and clean your carpets without the harsh fumes most drugstore cleaners give off. So gather your supplies and give this easy to make natural carpet cleaner a try. It will quickly become a product you won’t want to clean without!
