How to Save Money on Dog Stocking Stuffers

If you are a pet parent, chances are you treat your pooch to a stocking each holiday season. Filling a stocking with treats is a fun tradition, and dogs seem to enjoy coming down and finding their stocking just as much as children do. But what if the holidays have put you in a bit of financial bind this year? Well there is no reason to skip out on giving your pup a stocking. Instead, take a look below at how to save money on dog stocking stuffers.

1. Make your own treats.
The internet is chock full of DIY dog treat recipes. You typically don’t need a great deal of ingredients either, so making your own could save you some cash. Do a simple internet search for frugal dog treat recipes and see what you can come up with.

2. Repurpose old items.
Do you have an old blanket on hand? Why not turn it into a simple chew toy? Cut the blanket into strips and braid it. Make a tight knot to secure it and your dog now has a new to him chew toy he will love playing with. Here are some great Upcycle items you can make for your dog.

3. Shop at discount stores.
Pet shops often have higher prices on treats and toys, so instead, try your local close out store. Close out stores carry lots of great quality treats and toys for up to 70% off retail. Ask other pet parents if they have a store they recommend.

4. Stock up at the dollar store.
Check out your local dollar store for all of your treats and toys, and also to look for other items your pet might like. A new bowl, some tennis balls, or a cute towel you can roll up and play tug of war with are all great gifts and a steal at just $1!

5. Think outside of the box.
What else does your dog like besides the obvious toys and treats? Back scratches? A good bath? Tickle time? These things can’t fit in a stocking, but when the holidays arrive you can try to be more vigilant about doing these fun things your pet enjoys. Why not let them play with the wrapping paper you are taking off of your gifts just make sure there is not tape or staples and let them have fun playing for a few minutes. Give them the boxes and let them use them as a new bed with an old blanket inside! Now that is a true gift!

So don’t skimp on the stocking when your budget gets tight. Instead, give these simple tips a try and your dog will feel loved for less.
