5 Ways to Add Protein to Your Dog’s Diet

It is important to make sure your dog is getting enough protein in his diet. Especially during the cold winter months where your dog may need more fuel to stay active, or in aging dogs where they don’t absorb nutrients as easily. If you are looking for easy ways to add protein to your dog’s diet, take a look below at some simple ideas to get you started. Supplementing may be a lot easier than you may think.

How to Add Protein to Your Dog's Diet

5 Ways to Add Protein to Your Dog’s Diet

1. Mackerel
Fish is high in protein and mackerel is a great example of that. Head to your local grocer and find a simple can of mackerel for under $1. You can feed it as a snack or pour it directly into your dog’s food. They will love the taste as well as the healthy oils!

2. Tuna.
It seems as though everyone has a can of tuna or two in their pantry. The next time you feed your dog, stir a can of inexpensive tuna in and watch them devour it. Tuna is packed with protein and healthy oils that your dog is sure to benefit from. Make sure you use a can packed in water not oil! And only add a small amount at first as Tuna is very fatty and the addition of extra fat could cause stomach upset if given in large amounts.

3. Eggs.
Some pet owners are nervous about giving their dogs raw eggs and we honestly do not recommend it, but you can still scramble one up for them and let them reap the protein benefits. Simply scramble an egg (do not add any additives as you would with your own, such as seasonings or cheese) and serve warm. Your dog will feel like he is getting a real treat. Eggs are really great for dogs recovering from surgery or ones that are recovering from a sickness. Eggs are easy on their stomach and can be mixed with rice to create a meal.

4. Cottage cheese.
Cottage cheese is loved by dogs and it is filled with protein and healthy ingredients that will aid their digestion. Serve a spoonful of cottage cheese to your dog as a snack or serve it in their food if they are so inclined.

5. Hamburger.
Dogs can’t get enough hamburger, and that is a good thing since it is packed with healthy protein. Feed your dog low fat ground beef that has been cooked by being boiled. You do not want to pan fry it as that adds a lot of oils and grease to the meat. When making hamburger or buying hamburger for your dog make sure that there is no onion in it as onion causes anemia which is the complete opposite of what you want for your dog.

As you can see there are plenty of great ways to serve your dog some beneficial and tasty protein. Give some of these tips a try and see what a difference they make.

  3. My dogs love plain yogurt…they get a little bit each day…just a word of caution on yogurt , if you eat sweetened or fruit added yogurt, check the ingredients before letting your dogs have some, as sometimes there are artificial sweetners in there that are not good for dogs. Great list!
