National Get a Pal for Your Pet Day

“This designated day is a great opportunity to help spread the message that, like humans, pets also need pals and companionship when owners are away from home,” said Bob Vetere, APPA President & CEO. “Pets Add Life is all about promoting responsible pet ownership and we truly encourage current owners to consider welcoming additional pets of all types into the home.”
I really cannot imagine what Davinia and Indiana would do without each other. They are so attached that I cannot take one without the other. No more separate vet appointments – even if only one is sick they both have to come or they cry when they are apart. Way back before this Blog was started there was just Davinia. She was an only and you could tell she was lonely. Not that she didn’t get a lot of attention but even when I was home with her she didn’t really want to play she would just cuddle on the couch and lay there. Not that Davina and Indiana play but they do interact and cuddle together. They clearly communicate and keep each other company while I type away on the computer all day.
I shouldn’t say they don’t play period. They don’t play tug of war together or run around the house together but they do play in the yard together when they aren’t digging holes. Ok that might also be considered a team effort. And they do play together when we go to the dog park which we will be doing on a more regular basis now that we have an incredible one near by. I can count on one hand the amount of times they have gotten really upset with each other and 2 of those times was when I was working in an office full time. And that was only because they like to be in the same crate so they can rest together but I guess it was just too much so I switched to a much bigger crate and they were fine.
I think Davinia would like a baby (that became clear when we had the foster kittens here) and I know Indiana would like someone else to play with young but not too young. I do think there is a Beta Fish in our near future that isn’t exactly a playmate for Davinia and Indiana.

• Social interaction: Having at least two pets of the same type allows for more social interaction and will help keep them happier and healthier. For example, guinea pigs live happier in pairs, cats socialize by grooming each other, and dogs are natural pack animals that thrive among other dogs.
• Improved health and exercise: Not only is it entertaining to watch, but pets racing around together or even playing Tug-O-War helps them stay in better shape and encourages exercise that they might not receive without a pal.
• Companionship: When owners are away from home that makes for long, lonely days for single pets. Adding a new pet to the home not only provides humans additional companionship, but pets are much happier when they also have a pal to spend their days with.
• Choose the best pet for your lifestyle: Adding an additional pet to the home is a big responsibility and its important to consider which type of pet suits your home, lifestyle and family best. I always think this is a tricky one, BD used to be one of two then when my ex split up with his wife (long before I was on the scene) they took a dog each and BD developed fear aggression. Due to the job my ex does BD is left alone more than we would like, in fact now I no longer live with him sometimes he is alone for 12 hours (it breaks my heart) but we can’t trust him around other dogs so despite wanting him to have a dog for companionship it doesn’t feel like an option!
I swear by pets in pairs. We are a 2 dog, 2 cat household. They keep each other occupied!
