The minute I saw the email about this event hit my inbox took the time to sign up. I know we haven’t been sharing stories out of the Philippines about how families with pets are coping. In fact we haven’t said anything about the giant Typhoon that struck the country and killed so many. That doesn’t mean we don’t care or haven’t been thinking about everyone there. See many of the little boys and girls that would come over and play with us in the park everyday were half Filipino. They would tell Davinia and Indiana stories about going over on vacations and seeing their grandparents or cousins and how different life was for their family in the Philippines. They would play chase in the park with us and one day they even played dress up with the girls.

In Hong Kong it is very typical for a family to have a Filipino housekeeper / nanny we didn’t have one (though we did borrow one here or there on their day off to help clean up the dog hair) but we did see them with the children in the park or walking the family dog or I would bump into them while they were at the market shopping for the family they worked for. The Filipino maids in Hong Kong are fort he most part college educated but because of their country’s economy they make more money and can send it back to their families if they work in Hong Kong. It is not uncommon for Western men sent to Hong Kong by their companies early in their careers to wind up marrying Filipino women – that is how Davinia and Indiana had so many friends that were half Filipino.

We have lost touch with everyone we hung out with in Hong Kong but we hope that if they were living in the Philippines at the time that they are all safe and that their families were all in areas that were not badly damaged.

As if a 7.2 magnitude earthquake last October wasn’t enough, the central region of the Philippines was hit by another disaster, a 295 kph typhoon on November 8, 2013. Supertyphoon Yolanda (International name: Haiyan), one of the most powerful storms ever recorded, smashed the central part of the Philippines and left hundreds of millions of destroyed of properties, death toll at around 4000, and over 650,000 displaced survivors desperate for food and shelter among others.

As bloggers, we thought we could help these people by throwing this huge fundraising giveaway — a way we are all very familiar with. We have already raised $515 from this event and continuing to receive more donations through GoGetFunding.com. There will be a turnover of funds to a legitimate organizations that buys, repacks, and hands out relief goods directly to the victims. You can visit one of the host blogs for updates on the fund transfer in about a week or two.

If you wish to donate, you may do so by clicking this link.

She knew my favorite color was purple so she bought a bunch of purple and silver ornaments for my tree. I still use these today, years and years later. We might’ve not had anything under the tree that year, but having a wonderfully decorated tree, did help our spirits a lot that season!
