How to Save Money on Medications for Your Dogs

Our dog are our babies. They are a member of our family. As such, when one of them is ill, we will do anything to make them feel better again. The only problem is, the expense. Vet bills on top of medications they may need can add up fast! In this post, I will share tips on how you can save on medications and supplements your dogs need. But before we get into the details I want to state that not all discount pharmacies are the same and some will sell out of date medications or store them in facilities that are too hot or too cold for the medication to remain effective. So while we absolutely want to help you save money please do your research with any company you decide to go with and make sure that they have safety measures in place in order to ensure your dogs health.

How to Save Money on Medications for Your Dogs

How to Save Money on Medications for your Dogs

1. Buying directly from the vet can often cost you more money then having them write you a prescription to pick up at the local pharmacy or order online. Discuss with your vet the sources they feel will meet your needs but not cut corners. Did you know that you can buy your pet’s medications from most pharmacies? Just ask them to give you a script or call one in.

2. Ask about generics. There are generics for pet medications just like there are for humans. Also, ask if there is a substitute generic that will allow you to treat your dog’s illness without going into serious debt. Explain the situation in a reasonable manner with your vet so they know you want to help your dog but money is an issue.

3. Call around to online and over the phone pet pharmacies. You can get great savings here and if it is for something that is not an emergency, but rather a chronic condition or treatment, this option can be a very good and convenient one. Most offer free shipping as well and you get the medications in a short time.

4. Ask your vet what over the counter human medications can be used in place of pricey pet prescriptions. Often, there is an animal safe option, especially when it comes to pain management or other recurring issues your dog faces. Work with your vet in coming up with a treatment plan that will help your pet and allow you to continue treating them long term.

5. Get knowledgeable on supplements. Many chronic conditions can be treated with certain supplements, just like humans. Your vet can tell you what to give your dog or cat in order to lower symptoms. While you might still need to use pricey prescriptions hopefully it will help lessen the dosage or the frequency of outbreaks.

6. Shop around. Just like you should do for yourself, you should shop around for the best prices at human pharmacies for medication your dogs need. There can be a big difference between them.

7. It might seem unrelated, but feeding your pet a healthy diet can really help you save. If they are eating the best quality food you can afford, their overall health will improve. This could prevent future issues that might arise. Sometimes skin issues can be cleared up almost entirely by switching foods, sensitive stomach the same thing. A dog at their ideal body weight will be in less pain then if they are carrying around an extra 5 or 10lbs.

  1. I’m excited to say that we changed our dogs’ diet this year and I’m hoping that it results in better health down the line. My vet is really great about giving us the best deal or suggesting something more affordable, including supplements.

  2. This is some good advice, and I like how you mention to do your research first. Vets will warn clients about purchasing online. Some products are sold exclusively to veterinarians, so they worry about how these companies obtain the medications. And like you mention, the storage of them.

  3. When we can, we order from Drs. Foster and Smith online. They are very reputable and have good prices. We will let the vet know what we pay for online and often times they will match that price, so it is worth asking.

  4. I have been able to save some money with the site http://medicationcoupons.com/
They list manufacturer drug coupons for a lot of different pet medications. It’s worth looking into. Besides the heart worm preventive and the flea and tick meds, my dog is on 5 different eye medications and it is definitely getting expensive.
