Can Dogs and Cats Live Together
It is almost an age old question. Can Dogs and Cats live together peacefully. Will they always need to chase and be chased or can they hang out cuddle and become best friends. While we had our foster kittens here Davinia who is cat friendly but has never chosen to cuddle with a cat showed me that is it very possible for them to become best friends. When the kittens first came to live with us Davinia would try and lick them and she would be drooling and I wasn’t exactly sure what that meant. Did she want to bathe the kittens or eat them for dinner.
At about week three I realized she just wanted to mother them. She wanted to bathe them and then let them sleep with her or climb all over her or when they started to walk she would follow one around the house making sure it did not get hurt. She really loved her kittens. In the morning she needed to check to make sure that they were all in their room and she wanted to sniff them all and give them a once over. She liked some more then others but because I knew we were not keeping any I tried not to let her have the same baby each time. The picture above was taken right after a morning walk where Davinia is still all wet from the dew on the grass but wanted to make sure her kittens were ok.
She even let the babies eat which out trying to eat their food herself. Ok not exactly but when I told her the food was for the babies it was easier to keep her away from it when she was in the kittens room.
You might be thinking ok well a Cavalier is small so not much difference in size between a kitten and a 15lb dog. What if I told you a retired Military Dog and a kitten could live together in peace. Where the dog was just curious about the newcomer and wanted to get to know it and play with it. Would that convince you?
Our previous Golden Retriever loved our cat. They would groom each other. Our current cat and dog fight constantly, “just like cats and dogs”. The dog is 5 and the cat is 13. They are both males. The fights are loud and furious. It never stops.
I used to have a Springer Spaniel with two cats and a bunny ,he would play with them curl up infront of the fire with then he adored his extended family but they are gone now crossed the rainbow bridge a long time ago,and now I have Speedy

When my cat was only 6 mos old, I brought home a 3 month old Poodle I rescued from a puppy mill. My cat was used to being the apple of my eyes. She sure was not happy seeing my Puppy around. But after one week, she got used to it.Now they are inseparable. Always playing and cuddling. 🙂

Mom has had dog and cats together forever, never any problems. The dogs just need to know the cats are a part of the family and we are good. Some cats just never like us dogs but they manage to live around us.

I have always had cats and dogs living together and never had an issue. As with any pet, it will depend on their personality. As long as they are loving, I believe then can live together.
I have had poodles and I honestly think they would have more of an issue with another dog, then a cat.
I know of dogs killing cats they were raised with. I have 4 cats 3 dogs I do keep them separated. I know many people in rescue and go to lots of events for pets so hearing this is heart breaking when people share their stories with me .
