Your pet should not be allowed to even lick something made with one of these ingredients. Very small amounts of these foods can cause not only stomach upset but can land your pet in the Emergency Hospital or worse.

  2. Zylitol
  3. Coffee
  4. Caffeine Loaded Drinks
  5. Grapes and Raisins
  6. Alcohol

  8. Mushrooms growing in the wild
  9. Yeast Dough – this is any uncooked dough that contains yeast. Not onl can it expand in your dogs stomach but the yeast creates alcohol which could lead to alcohol Poisoning.

Food Hazards – Toxic

Your Pets should not be knowingly fed these items but if they accidentally get a little bit they should be monitored for adverse effects.

  1. Raw Onion will cause anemia if your pet gets a piece that falls on the floor or snatches some off of a plate call your vet and let them know how much was eaten. If it was a very small amount an extra handful of kibble should counteract the effects. Some fresh cooked liver would certainly be a welcome treat.
  2. Raw Garlic (powdered garlic and cooked garlic in small amounts have been shown to help keep the bugs away and has other health benefits)
  3. Rhubarb – This is something that I had no idea about until I was doing research for this post Its not something I eat but I know of plenty of summer recipes that call for Rhubarb.
  4. Mushrooms meant for Human Consumption – all mushrooms are bad for dogs but those we are able to eat are mulitple times less toxic then those that can be found growing in the wild.
  5. Raw Fish – Raw fish can contain all sorts of parasites and bacteria. Even if you feed a raw food diet to your dog raw fish should not be on the menu.
  6. Raw Egg – Salmonela and e-coli can live in a raw egg and could make a young or elderly dog very sick. Raw Eggs also contain an emzyme that can cause major issues for your dog.

Food Hazards – Parts of the plant that are toxic

The items on this list are the the fruit or vegetable themselves but parts of the plant which are toxic. If these items grow in your yard please be aware of what your dog is trying to get off the tree or bush. 1. My dog has always been a fruit natic so I am careful about what I give her. It must be the grapeseed in grapes and raisins that make them so toxic!

The bones are soooo bad…especially anything with marrow. Our poor pup parris had to go for a 3 day $600 vet visit 🙁

In addition to some foods being dangerous, we found out that grains aren’t in a dog’s natural diet and still added into a lot of big store brands. We spent a lot of time trying to figure out what the best kind of meal was for our australian shepherd Rigby who seemed to be allergic to everything. We made a blog about the struggle to find the right kind of food.

We also wrote a post about toxic foods but didn’t think to include dangerous things that they should still avoid. We may need to post something like that soon 🙂

  4. Great post. I actually did a similar post this morning ( ) and used your website as one of my sources. It continues to surprise me how many dog owners are not aware of what foods are dangerous and harmful for their dogs. The worst I’ve heard is “Well, HE ate it. Why would he eat something that could harm him?”
