How to convince my parents to let me get a dog?

I just saw this question posted on Yahoo Answers and thought it would be a great topic to cover today. Most of us have been in this child’s shoes wanting to get a new puppy or kitten maybe it was your first dog or cat maybe it was to add a new addition to your house and your parents said no.

How to Convince my parents to let me get a dog

The truth is pets are expensive. They need food and veterinary care that goes above and beyond what your family is currently doing. Sure they needs bowls, and beds, blankets, toys, leashes, and collars but most of those things could technically be made from things you already have around the house if you have time and are crafty at all. It is the food and the medical expenses that you need to worry about.

How to convince my parents to let me get a dog? First lesson:
A free puppy is NEVER free they come with all sorts of medical conditions, could be sick, and even if healthy on the outside need an immediate trip to the vet for vaccinations. Your bill could be in the thousands to save your new dog’s life.

Even a young dog from a shelter or rescue will still need to see a vet within 2 days of bringing it home to ensure that it is healthy and everything is up to date. Yes, the rescue paid for all of that but you want to start your relationship off with your new family member on the right paw so to speak. $60 – $100 for a well dog visit.

How to convince my parents to let me get a dog? Second Lesson:
Food is an ongoing expense. Whether you are buying your new dog’s food at the grocery store or the dog boutique there is an ongoing cost associated with purchasing that food. As your puppy grows they will need more food each day. Even the cheapest food over 10 years of your dog’s life will cost about $4,000. Sure you could make food yourself in bulk but it still wouldn’t be cheaper then a $1 per day. Though you might be able to make it happen if you shop in bulk and know how to coupon. Then if you don’t store it properly or you don’t go through it fast enough it can spoil and make your dog sick. Which means back to the vet for a check up and medications.

How to convince my parents to let me get a dog? Third Lesson

It is a hard lesson but do you really have time for a dog right now. Yes it is the summer and we still have July and most of August before school starts again but what will happen once school starts. You will be in school for about 7 hours a day then it is off to soccer practice or ballet lessons, or your volunteer service hours. Children are very busy these days making sure to become well rounded so that they can have their pick of colleges. Leaving little time for snuggling with the new puppy and playing fetch in the yard.

You could get a show quality puppy and become a Junior Handler learning how to show your dog and lessons in animal husbandry but dog shows are expensive and lessons to become a good handler and teach your dog how to show do cost money too. So while it would be something on your resume most other children and teens your age will not have it also comes with a hefty price tag and a life long commitment.

There are only 24 hours in a day no matter how much we would like to add a few. Will you still have time in your day to spend with the new dog?

Can you really say that you have the time and that a new dog would not be a financial burden to your family?
Start small ask for books about dogs or about the breed of dog you want.
Do research online to learn about the breed you want and the needs it has.
Over the course of a year or two ask for the new dog’s leash, collar, bowl, bed, and toys. Ask for them from family members for your birthday and holidays show that you are committed to the dog before it ever comes home.
Ask for dog training lessons so that you can teach your dog how to grow up to be happy and healthy. Continue on with those lessons so that your dog passes its Canine Good Citizen Test then you can go out with your dog and do your volunteer hours.

As a parent who might be going through this same thing or a parent that has gone through this in the past what tips or ideas would you offer this child?

  1. Honestly, if the parents don’t want a dog, don’t get one because the kid will get bored and tired of the work of a dog and the dog will suffer. We have seen that in 3 homes on our street in the past few years. One dog they gave away, the other 2 live rotten lives – one, a high energy lab is either in the house or on the deck and the other is just in the house with quick bathroom breaks. Maybe it is better than shelter life but it is no life for a dog. At first the kids walked and played with the dogs and then the fun wore off. It makes mom furious! Maybe get a cat if the kid has to have a pet as they are lower maintenance.

  3. Hi, Felissa,

You have explained very well πŸ™‚

Also, I would like to tell one brilliant way :

If you show your parents that you’re passionate about having a dog, you must be willing to contribute your pocket money while buying a puppy. Though, your parents will never take money from you at that time. But, this will let them know that you’re really serious.

    • I have asked my mum and I’m pretty serious about getting one, the puppy is free but its because the owner didn’t know the dog she bought was pregnant. I ‘m willing to pay for I t supplies with my saving and throw away all my toys i don’t want that I haven’t played with ormtouchedmsince I was little , so I could make money then to, towards the vet bills, my mum said no and I don’t know what to do, I even researched the dog i like and make a plan for walks and stuff . it’s annoying, its my thirteenth Birthday so I thought she would let me have something special… Any ideas?

      • Maybe these tips will handle your situation my friend!

        1. Have a yard sale and sell the stuff u don’t need anymore such as toys, jewelry, clothes that don’t fit etc. That u can save up some pocket money for.
        2. Look up at least 3-4 of your favorite breeds that u like but show your mum that it can be a small breed to persuade for her to say yes.
        3. Make a PowerPoint for the breed that u want to have and make a big PowerPoint so she could be impressed. Make sure that u have all the info written down such as size, weight, etc. And look up some videos. And also look for a vetinarian that is close by you and pays less than others do so u can have the right amount of money for the dog or puppy you want!
        4. Ask your mum if u can take care of something for a couple of weeks such as an egg or a goldfish and act like you care for the most part
        5. Be responcible, being responcible is that she would think about getting you a puppy soon or a later. Make sure all your chores are done and kkep a calendar and plan on when to clean so that she would think that your really responcible so that she would have no time to lose about the possibility of thinking of getting you a dog.
        6. Always care and not whine that she won’t think your immature.

  4. Do not take aspirin or items including aspirin as these will certainly extend or re-commence bleeding.
