Train a Dog Not to Pull on the Leash

Dog Info from Global Pet Expo

HALTI Headcollar

All Dogs need to get daily exercise. -The more often you walk your dog and follow these tips the more calm and well behaved they will be in their lives.

Train a Dog Not to Pull on the Leash

1. To Train a Dog to walk on a leash starts before the leash even gets attached to the collar. An over excited dog will continue to be over excited the entire walk. If you stay calm your dog will eventually get the hint that it is ok to be excited but they need to calm down.

2. Walk your dog. Do not let your dog walk you. This starts at your front door. Make sure you lead the way out of the house.

3. Are you using a collar or harness appropriate for your dog. Mot dog owners don’t realize that putting a dog that pulls into a harness will just strengthen their front legs if no other training is given.

4. Start training a dog not to pull on the leash slowly. The first day you just want them to get used to the fact that they have not only have a collar around their neck but it is now attached to something. You might see some circle turning or it could feel like you are trying to wrangle in a whale at the end of a fishing line. Others will just plant themselves in a sit and not go anywhere.

5. Walk only a few steps at first to show your dog or puppy there is nothing to be afraid of. That not doing the trick have a small treat in your hand and show it. Let your dog come to you and get the treat. Then walk a few more steps.

6. Once you get forward motion in your dog continue walking at a quicker pace. Make it fun almost a run. You know the prancing like movement the handlers do at dog shows? That is the pace you will want to go. A little more then a walk but not a run just enough to get your dog moving at the proper gait for them.

7. If your dog is going too fast and pulling on the leash change directions. Do not jerk your dog but calmly make a tight circle and continue in the new direction. The change in direction will get your dogs attention.

8. Make sure you are using an appropriate collar, lead, or harness for your dog. If in doubt visit your local Pet Supply store and speak to their dog trainer about your concerns or specific issues.

Using a Halti Headcollar to train a dog not to pull on the leash

The HALTI headcollar was developed by Dr Roger Mugford over 20 years ago. The first of its’ kind and hailed as the gentle yet effective solution which dog owners have been looking for. The HALTI headcollar and the complete range of HALTI stops pulling products which have since been developed, remain the dog trainer’s choice today. HALTI has become the world’s favourite canine headcollar because it has been designed to combine maximum steering efficiency with unequalled comfort for the dog. There are no metal parts in contact with the dog’s skin and the point of steering is well down the nose and away from the eyes.

Come back tomorrow for a massive Giveaway from Halti to celebrate National Walking the Dog Day where we will be Giving Away 20 Halti Headcollars.

  3. I’ve used a Gentle Leader which works on the same principle. Would love to win a Halti to compare. Not only did it help with pulling, but my dog now associates it with training and with just being calm. All I have to do is show him the head collar and he calms down. Put it on, and he’s much more focused and ready to work.
