Dogs As Protectors – Dog Stands Guard Over Missing Boy

Several times a year we hear about dogs protecting little children who wander away from their homes until they are found by search and rescue teams. Today was no different a little Boy disappeared from his home in Custer, South Dakota with his loyal dog while his mom had her backed turned for a minute. The dog stuck close to the little boy as the boy walked into the woods which seems to have kept the boy calm and unaffected by his hour long adventure.

When local police found the 3 year old boy the family dog was standing guard so instead of upsetting the dog they contacted the boy’s father who took the dog while authorities checked over the little boy to make sure that he was uninjured. The family and local police are unsure if the boy followed the dog out of the yard or the dog followed the boy out of the yard but though police believe the dog would not allow the boy out of its site. Authorities tracked two by following footprints in the snow.

The entire event lasted only 55 minutes from the minute he went missing to the second police found him being guarded by the family dog. Its a good thing he was found so quickly as he was not dressed to be out in the weather for long with only a light jacket on over clothing in 30 degree weather. When the search and rescue team was able to talk to the boy once the dog was taken home the little boy wanted to know why there were so many police and emergency in the woods who came to meet him at the end of his adventure. The little boy was taken to the hospital just to make sure but there were no signs of injury to him or his canine best friend.

The family has asked that their son’s name not be revealed and are just glad their little boy is home with them and that he was protected while he was missing.
