Avalanche Rescue Dogs

Avalanche Rescue Dogs

The Alpine Meadows Avalanche Rescue Dogs Team is joining forces with Squaw dogs to become one of the most elite dog rescue programs in the world. These two programs have been longtime supporters of the Humane Society of Truckee Tahoe and have raised enough money to dedicate one of the adoption rooms after longtime Alpine Meadows Avalanche Rescue Dogs Program Director, Bill Foster, who passed away in an avalanche on December 24, 2012.

Alpine Meadows has some extreme mountain terrain that tests the skill and bravado of skiers from around the world. Each year when creating the course they put an extreme amount of effort to keep their bowls, chutes and glades safe from avalanche danger. But they know that disaster can strike and that is why they have an Elite Team of Avalanche Rescue Dogs on standby to help in an emergency. There are 10 dogs on the Alpine Meadows Avalanche Rescue Dogs team this season, including three puppies. They vary in age, breed, experience and training. They need to have dogs of all ages and training experience as these dogs put an extreme amount of wear and tear on their bodies with the work that they do and so they always need young dogs to be ready to take over if one gets sick or injured or needs to retire. Dogs undergo training several times a week, advancing in skills as they go. First, they might be tasked with basic obedience and listening skills. Eventually, they start working on locating objects such as a backpack or even clothing under the snow. The next step is to find people who have been buried specifically for the training exercise so if an avalanche occurs they are ready to find those who are trapped alive and can bring them to safety.
