What do you need to know about Online Pet Pharmacies before you make a purchase?

If you are online much you probably notice all the different advertisements for online pet pharmacies and you probably ask yourself why would there need to be so many and are they something that I can or should take advantage of. If you have a young dog or cat chances are they are not on any long term medications and ordering ahead or waiting for medication to arrive in the mail when your dog or cat does get sick is not something you are going to do. Older dogs and cats just like their owners do get more aches and pains and chronic problems that while annoying can be controlled with medication. If you pet is on a medication that they will most likely be taking for their rest of their life you may find that an online pharmacy has cheaper prizes then what is available at your vet or even at the local pharmacy even after a discount. Yes some regular pharmacies do offer family plans that include the family pet!

If you are shopping for your medication or your dog’s medication online you want to make sure that not only are you dealing with a company that is cheaper but that is selling you what they claim to be. Online pharmacies can buy in much great bulk then your veterinarian but that also means that they need to get rid of each bulk order before the expiration date. If the product is pennies on the dollar for a medication you need to purchase figure out why. Can you trust online pharmacies? Do they have a return policy or refund policy can you speak with someone to make sure that you are getting the right medication. Make sure the medication whether a flea and tick preventative or a insulin for a diabetic dog is in date and comes from the manufacturer you think it does. While supplements, dog treats, and shampoo generally do not need to be prescribed by a veterinarian you want to make sure that prescriptions require veterinary approval yes it is an extra step and might slow down the process because lets face it veterinarians and their staff are busy people trying to treat the animals that come under their care. When you are at your appointment ask your vet if they think the particular online pharmacy is a trustworthy one and selling the product at a decent price. Many vets will talk to you about it especially for chronic illnesses that require treatment over a lifetime.
Going back to the part where I said you want to be able to contact the company and speak with a live representative from the online pet pharmacies that is knowledgeable about their products and can help ensure you purchase the right thing not necessarily the one you think is the right thing. Make sure that there is a pharmacist on staff (at least one) that can answer questions about drug interactions or if you should give the medication on a full stomach or empty stomach. Your vet will probably have gone through all of that with you but asking again can’t hurt right?
One company where you can purchase all of your pet medicine from vet medic. And when I say all of your pet medicine I really meant it. They offer medication for everyone from your dog and cat to your bunny and the cows and sheep on the farm. Just one more reason why you might choose to shop at an online pharmacy because they actually carry all of the medication or preventatives for all the animals at your house. They also offer veterinary diets to go along with the medication and some toys and treats to help make the medicine go down.

What other tips do you have for someone who is looking into online pet pharmacies in order to purchase their dog or cat’s medication?

felissa, thanks for the info, have you heard about the National pet pharmacy, i ordered some revoultion from them, this is my first time ordering from them, can you please let me know ifyou heard from them? thanks, laura
Hi Laura,
I don’t have any experience with National Pet Pharmacy. My suggestion is that when you receive the product in the mail to check the packaging to make sure it looks like the one you would have purchased at the vet. If it looks different then the one you are used to call Revolution to speak with them about the purchase they should be able to help identify it to make sure it is the correct product. If everything looks normal (it really should) check to make sure the product hasn’t expired.
Do I need to mail my pet’s prescription before you can send its medication?

Awesome! Tremendously enjoyable piece of writing. I am just storing this site today. Cheers!
I appreciate that you offer a comprehensive online pharmacy link on your site. It is very convenient that it addresses our pets needs in such a specialized way. I am looking for a company that offers pet scans for cancer treatment and wondered if you have helpful posts regarding this too? I have been able to get my cat medications on the link, but since you seem competent in this area I thought I would ask. Thank you.
