Boggs Mountain Shelter Shut Down by Georgia Bureau of Investigation

Boggs Mountain Humane Shelter Shut Down by Georgia Bureau of Investigation. A Fox5 Atlanta reporter’s undercover investigation of of Euthanization at the No-Kill Shelter has led authorities to the alleged heartbreaking news of financially sponsored dogs and cats in the no-kill Boggs Mountain Humane Society’s “I’m a Lucky Dog” program being euthanized. On Friday, Boggs Mountain was closed pending a criminal investigation of fraud with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

When I heard a rumor last week about this going on I had it in the back of my mind to check into it as my parents adopted their dog Whisper from Boggs Mountain. They had a great expirience aside from the fact that for the first few weeks she was with my parents she would only eat bagels and scrambled eggs (for a dog found in the middle of the forrest that always seemed odd to me). Whisper also doesn’t like going into new or unusual places and had to be carried into the house after potty time for a while and still to this day any time she has to board because my parents go out of town she has to be carried into the kennel. My parents also had the neighborhood cat spayed there when she showed up at their house one day and couldn’t fit through the bars of their front porch anymore. The spay went well and they charged a fraction of any other local agency even with the condition Dora the Expolorer (that’s what my mom calls the cat) was in. Being that my parents always had a good expirience there even bringing Whisper back to say hello to the staff and volunteers I wasn’t ready to jump on any bandwagons that might prove to be untrue. At this point with the Sherrif watching over any remaining animals at the shelter — there were several transports out today and one more tomorrow. Any question of something going on there can no longer be called into question.

I didn’t think about this story again until today. But yes it is apparently 100% true that dogs that were being sponsored through the Boggs Mountain Lucky Dog / Kitty Program where in fact not really all that Lucky. While it is impossible for a No-Kill shelter to be completly no-kill (some dogs are just too sick and the humane thing to do is not make them suffer any longer). The dogs and cats that were killed were not in horrible shape yes one was severly underweight but so was Whisper when my parents adopted her. My parents have now had Whisper for a bit over 2 years. She eats pretty much anything she is fed, loves the extra treats and food we get sent that the girls aren’t interested in that makes the way to my parents house, she also loves the drive thru at McDonald’s (once in a while). She has her own special bed to sleep in at night and a giant food pantry to hide in during a storm though sometimes she will hide under my mom’s desk if someone is there on the computer. When we visit Whisper and Davinia are not exactly great friends though they will share a sun spot on the back porch if they don’t have to look at each other. Whisper and Indiana will cuddle together and play together sometimes. Whisper even stole one of Davinia and Indiana’s beds and claimed it as her own (that’s why she doesn’t fit in the bed in the picture above). My dad works from home so he is home with her almost all day everyday and when he does have to go out she gets to go for a drive with him. Whisper howls in the morning and afternoon to tell everyone it is time to go for a walk where she gets to meet up with some of her friends.

Here is Whisper telling everyone it is time for a walk with Davinia barkign in the background and then running through the screen.

Boggs Mountain did right by Whisper they found her a home that loves her which is why I had to wait until more information was available about what was going on there to share with all of you our readers and friends. We will continue to cover this story as it unfolds and cover the protest which will be taking place at the courthouse this Saturday.

  1. I’m happy for Whisper, the other dogs, not so much.

  2. Stephanie Hungerford says

That is so frustrating in the past I worked with a humane society that I felt didn’t put down animals that needed to euthanize for humane or safety reasons. So the healthy adoptable animals were well taken care of by volunteers which I use to be until I moved over 16 hours away.

  3. Well written and sensitive article…thank you for NOT bashing our beloved Rabun County while sharing your story. I am truly sorry for all involved in this. I wish everyone would try to remmber that there is good in everyone of us…Because we are all made.in the image of God…we are all imperfect but redeemable. For whatever reason, we all do stupid things…not all on this level…but nonetheless..we screw up. I look forward to this situation being resolved, for those who must be to be punished for the harm they have caused others …and that everyone cease the ugliness, threats and name calling …and practice forgiveness.
