Baby Chimpanzee Abandonded by Mother Raised By Mastiff

Two years ago, in a Russian zoos, a female chimpanzee abandonded her baby. When one of the employees of the zoo took the little chimpanzee home to try and nurse it back to health and raise it until it was old enough to go back to the Chimpanzee encloser an unlikely bonding took place. The zoo worker had a new litter of Mastiff puppies at home and the hope was that the dog would allow the little baby Chimpanzee to nurse. It never crossed the zoo workers mind that her dog, a mastiff, would become a full time surrogate mother for the orphan chimpanzee and treat the baby as her own.







The baby chimp ate with the mastiff and her young litter and even shares their bed. Amazing snaps of the unconventional family were posted on a Russian Blog (which is not really family friendly) by the owner of the dog and caretaker of the chimp on January 10, 2012.



The photos show the diaper-wearing chimp snuggling up to and clinging to her surrogate mom and eating on all fours alongside the family’s other puppies while the mother Mastiff looks on which means that they were very early photos taken within a few months of the baby chimp arriving in the home. Photos also show the little chimpanzee cuddling up to the giant dog and her puppies and climbing all over them.



What makes these photos and the bond between the Chimpanzee and Dog even more remarkable according to scientists is that Primates and Dogs do not generally tolerate each other as dogs feel Primate behavior too unpredictable.
