Men Love Dogs Too… but we’re all different…

Men love dogs going to the dog park

I’ll be the first to admit, I’m a Pawrent… Luna is more than ‘Just a dog’ to me and I’m one of those annoying people that post or talk about their kids latest award, poop, or drawing etc., whilst dutifully remembering all the other ‘kids’ names down at the park, even though I don’t know the names of their pawrents at all. I have met other guys like me out there, so I know that I’m not the only male who is crazy over their pooches, but I thought that this week I would take a look at some of the other kinds of males and their dogs that you might find down at the park or at obedience training…

The “My girlfriend/wife/partner made me come” guy…
Dog Type: Terriers, Small, toy or medium dogs..
You know the one… Walking about 10 metres behind his partner and the dog, playing on his phone, or enjoying a cigarette, avoiding making eye contact with the other dog owners, sometimes left to wrangle the children. May be known to check his watch and think ‘how long til this is over?’

The “Does my dog make me look tough?” guy…
Dog Type: Staffie, Ridgeback, Boxer, ‘tough dogs’
Metal studs, leather, chains, and no I’m not talking about on the Dog. The kind of guy you usually don’t want to hang around if they are at the park because the dog is more of a status symbol than a pet or part of the family.

The “I’m secure in my masculinity” guy…
Dog Type: Poodle, Maltese, ‘small or toy dogs’
The guy who is quite happy to take Muffy down to the park because he is so comfortable in his own masculinity that no one would dare question him. We have one of these guys down at my local park, he has the tiniest little dog named ‘Stella’ not sure what she is, but he is quite happy to be known as Stella’s dad.

The “My dog is my training partner” guy…
Dog Type: Kelpie, Border Collie, ‘working dogs’
Usually you don’t even get a chance to talk to one of these guys, because they are running laps around the park with their dog at their side. Known for training shorts and singlet’s, sometimes even on bike with their dog running by their side. Their dog is their best mate, friend and training partner, they are a team and could knock out a triathlon in their sleep.

These are of course only a few of the types of guys and their dogs you may find around, I’d love to hear the types of Dog Dads you have encountered?

Til next week!

  1. MilShelb Mom says

Awesome! I know that Milly and Shelby are very loved by their Dad and it is nice to know that other men love their dogs like they are their babies.

  2. Great article! Made me laugh a little and think of how many different “types” I have seen 🙂

  3. Loved the blog … you might check out mine at ChicagoNow.com (search Sue Yellen as blogger) and the one about my Wigglebutt Duncan (wigglebuttduncan.blogspot.com). Warmly, Sue Yellen

  4. Love your posting on your page

  5. Great post. My hubby loves all dogs but he has especially warmed up to our Pom. Not the manliest of dogs, that’s for sure but he loves him.

  6. Cute! Love this posting.

  7. My son’s dad had a beagle and together we had gotten a rott/hound mix. I just know during our marriage he loved those dogs more than me, hehe. And those dogs loved him right back!

  8. I love it!

  9. Love the “guy + dog” categories . . too funny.

  10. How about pug guys?

    • We would love to hear from you if you would like to put together a post about being a pug daddy if you are interested.

  11. I have always felt that if a man dose not like dogs or if your dog does not like the man do not date him. Animals, in my opinion are part of the family. I respect a man that loves his dog!
