Meet the The Treeing Walker Coonhound

Treeing Walker Coonhound Newest AKC recognized breed

CSG Bolt Action Cherokee Joe

Called “the people’s choice” of the Coonhound breeds, the energetic Treeing Walker is perfectly suited for the task for which it was bred – tracking and treeing wild raccoons.  The breed’s competitive spirit makes it an ideal choice for competitive coonhound events.  The breed’s coat is short and glossy, yet dense enough for protection. The Treeing Walker Coonhound was developed from the Walker Foxhound, which evolved from the Virginia Hounds that descended from the earliest English Foxhounds brought to America. Originally classified as an English Coonhound, its breeders broke away from the English version in 1945 and bred to retain the qualities they desired. The Treeing Walker is a fast, sensible hunter that locates its quarry quickly and has superb endurance and treeing ability. Historically the Treeing Walker Coonhound hunted raccoon, a principle source of fur and meat during the 19th and 20th centuries. The breed assisted its owner in the hunt by “treeing” its quarry and announcing to the hunter with its bark that it had been found.

Treeing Walker Coonhounds are great with children and get along well with other dogs. Like most hounds, they are even-tempered and difficult to annoy or drive into aggression towards people or other dogs. They are, however, energetic, and have a tendency to stand up on their hind legs to pursue their curiosity about a young child or small dog that is picked up by a person, which can be alarming to people that are fearful of dogs. It is highly unusual to see these dogs display aggression towards other dogs or humans in particular. They can be highly focused and idiosyncratically attracted to certain toys, locations, people, sounds, or objects. They love to nest and cuddle. Getting a Walker hound out of a bed, off a couch or away from a fireplace will be a feat in itself. They love to sleep after a long day, and are the perfect dogs for watching television. Generally easy to train with little trouble, they make excellent pets if well exercised.

oh my gosh that is the same exact dog as mine. recently his favorite part of the day has been when i take him for a run at night to chase cats of of our property.

  4. A walker coonhound recently showed up at my house–skinny as could be and her feet were raw and swollen. I have had her about a month and plan to keep her. I asked my vet how old she was and gaging by her teeth, he said she was probably around 8 years old. She chews and tugs on everything and has tons of energy and play in her. She acts more like a young dog than an 8-year-old. Is this characteristic of this breed of dog even when they get older? Thanks for any information you can give me.
