Life Happens: A Practical Guide to Personal Finance from College to Career by Mitch Weiss

Giveaway

I will start with the author who I have known my entire life – his wife and my mom were college suite mates and along with all of the women that they shared that space with have stayed in touch all of these years celebrating the ups and downs of life together. Which means that when Mitchell first started putting this book together my entire family knew he was and that my mom also a professor was asked to read through some of the drafts to see what she thought. At the time I first heard about the book I was under the impression that it was just going to be something for his students as class material or possibly something that everyone at the college would receive. I had no idea that it was going to be made available for anyone to purchase via e-reader / tablet.

Mitchell realized that even “smart” college graduates who might have finished at the top of their class know nothing about keeping their own finances, what having a student loans means, how to lease or buy their first car, and what to do when they are ready to settle down and buy a house. It turns out college doesn’t prepare you for any of those things. There are Finance classes for business majors but nothing for getting your own financial life in order. Pick up a book at the library about finances and chances are you will not be able to get through the first chapter without thinking that the book is not for you. Mitchell wanted to change that. He wanted anyone and everyone to be able to benefit from reading his book. From what I understand he achieved his goal.

About the Book

Yes, you’ll learn a lot of things as you make your way through college. But you won’t get the kind of education you need to take control of your financial life. Written by a financial industry insider, college professor and a parent of two children who’ve successfully made the transition from college to career, Life Happens delivers straight talk on student loans and mortgage loans, debit cards and credit cards, apartment leases and auto leases, cash management, career planning, and more.

With unique insight, practical advice, and personal stories that help bring it all to life, Mitch Weiss untangles the convoluted world of personal banking and finance. And because no one can know everything about everything, he’s also included links to hundreds of articles and helpful websites as well as to his blog.

Whether you’re starting college, in school or about to launch your career, Life Happens will help you to stay on the money!

About the Author

Mitch and a colleague developed a popular course on personal finance for the University of Hartford. He’s also been teaching it since its fall 2009 debut. His lecture style is the same as his writing style— relaxed, conversational, spirited and irreverent. The material in Life Happens is drawn from those lectures and from his extensive industry experience and expertise.
Mitch and his wife, Ronnie, have helped their two grown children through college and the starting-out pains of their independent lives and careers. He not only survived those challenges, he’s also lived to talk about them and to share his hard-won knowledge with you in Life Happens: A Practical Guide to Personal Finance from College to Career.
