At first I was just going to post this as a warning to dog owners who live in Oregon but have decided after learning a bit more about the issue that the warning actually applies to anyone even those buying Wild Salmon or Trout at their local grocery store or fish monger as far away as Florida. I don’t think that fish is part of the raw food diet for dogs but if it is or if you do offer raw fish once in a while this is information you should know. Davinia and Indiana love fish but I don’t think they have ever had raw fish.
Raw Pacific Northwest salmon can be infected with a parasitic fluke carrying infectious bacteria, which can make your dog very sick and can be fatal if not treated within two weeks. At least one case is currently being treated in Tillamook County right now, and there could be more as salmon die off and dogs eat their remains. There is an infectious bacteria embedded within the parasite that thrives in the raw salmon flesh. The dog eat the salmon carcass found around the beach as the salmon die off after spawning. After ingestion it makes its way through the digestive system and into the dog’s intestinal tract, the parasite then releases the organism, which spreads to the animal’s organs.
“The key is not to let animals run around free without a leash, because they can get into carcasses that may be hiding under rocks,” says Dr. Emilio DeBess, Oregon Public Health Division veterinarian.
How to keep your dog safe:
Don’t feed raw fish to your dog. If you do home prepare meals for your dog any containing fish should either be cooked thoroughly or deep-frozen for at least two weeks. Also watch out for the following fish as salmon poisoning disease can also be found in the following fish trout lamprey, sculpin, redside shiner, shad, sturgeon, candlefish and the large-scale sucker.
Symptoms:
Watch out for high fever, vomiting, diarrhea or swollen lymph nodes. Symptoms are similar to those of Parvovirus. If your dog is infected with salmon poisoning disease, it will likely show symptoms between six and 10 days after ingesting the tainted fish.
Treatment:
Treatment with an antibiotic and dewormer can improve your dog’s health within a few days.

Yep, we’re pretty careful about freezing all of our fish before the dogs get to have any. They LOVE LOVE LOVE raw salmon or herring as a meal, but only after it has been properly frozen to make sure nodoggy gets sick!
Ich denke, anderen Website Besitzern sollte diese Seite als Vorbild zu nehmen, sehr sauber und sehr benutzerfreundlich Stil und Design, sowie die Inhalte. Sie sind ein Experte in diesem Zeug!
