Thailand Flooding Leaves More Abandoned Dogs in Its Wake

Thailand’s Soi Dog Foundation (“Soi” means “alley” in Thai) has joined together with other animal welfare organizations enlisting high-powered boats and volunteers to save the stray and abandoned animals.

Volunteers travel flooded streets on small boats, packed with dog crates to save the dogs. The dogs are then brought to animals shelters in drier areas of the country. According to animal activists, rescue operations are getting tougher now because the sheer number of dogs and the vast areas that are now being flooded. More areas are being flooded including another rescue organization’s low cost clinic in Bangkok where the animals found were being taken.

Soi Dog Foundation estimates that there are 60,000 to 80,000 dogs and cats in need of rescue or will be in need of rescue shortly if the floodwater keep rising. The situation keeps getting worse for the dogs and cats because with the flood water comes wild animals into the city animals these dogs have never encountered don’t know how to defend themselves against and could become their next meal.

Rescuers are resorting to catching dogs in nets to try and bring them to safety.
