A dog adopted less then 7 hours earlier from a local pound likely saved a Hillsboro family from burglary Wednesday, and possibly an even worse fate.
Rubert “Lee” Littler says he was taking Hercules outside Wednesday night when the 135-pound dog started growling, then charged after a man running out of their basement. The dog bit into the man’s ankle as he climbed a fence and got away. Police say the home’s phone and cable lines had been cut.
Police believe that the robber must have just come up out of the basement from cutting the wires when he heard Mr. Littler open the door. Hercules jumped off the back porch, over the stairwell, and the guy took off toward the fence (maybe 15 or 20 feet away). Hercules ran up and grabbed the guy by his ankle as he was going over the fence. Mr. Littler believes that if Hercules had been healthy at the time and not still recovering from what vets believe was a coyote attack the robber would never have made it over the fence.
Hercules is now assured a permanent spot in the Littler family they are no longer planning on looking for a permanent home for him. They figure he has earned his spot and are glad they pulled him out of the shelter and off of the euthanasia list not just for saving his life but he might have saved their lives as a thank you for the kindness.

Wow, amazing!
Good dog, Hercules!!! Back when it was just me and my dog Sephi, she scared away an intruder. I wasn’t feeling well that day and had forgotten to lock the front door. I heard the door open, a man’s voice, then Sephi gave the meanest bark and growl I have ever heard. Needless to say, he took off running and never looked back. Dogs are the best – protection, companionship, entertainment, and so much more!
They already had four dogs already, but stepped up to the plate to save this one, and low and behold, the dog returned the favor.
