An elderly woman was apparently waiting with a heavy cane in hand at the court house ready to beat the person responsible for dumping a Boxer by the water in a garbage bag in Malta. Police calmed her down and convincing her to leave before the guilty party arrived for sentencing. they had to assure her that the court would deal with the offender and that she did not have to beat him with her cane in order to get justice for the dog who eventually died. The elderly woman was not the only one waiting at the courthouse to confront the man who killed his dog in fact authorties had to create a barrier between the dogs owner and those waiting to confront him
The 4-year-old dog, a female boxer was found alive on Friday morning by a jogger who heard it making noises. The dog, which was dubbed Gaia by its rescuers, died later that evening despite efforts by the staff at the Ta’ Qali animal hospital. Joseph Galea admitted to causing the dog’s death, having told the police that he decided to dispose of it because it was sick. He walked all the way to the Kalkara skip – nearly an hour’s walk – to dump the dog.
Magistrate Anthony Vella subsequently jailed Mr Galea for 9 months and fined him €20,000, the harshest sentence ever handed down by a Maltese court for animal cruelty. He also ordered the confiscation of Mr Galea’s other 2 dogs.
