Dog Friendly Tail Gate Party – What You Need to Know

Its football season again and that means lots of parties with your friends to watch your favorite team win. It also means leaving your dog home for hours at a time while you are out enjoying the game. But that doesn’t have to be the case. You can throw a dog friendly tailgate party or have the party at your house. You could even include other canines on the guest list as long as they are all well socialized an don’t have a problem with big crowds and screaming and yelling.

1. Before bringing your dog along for a tailgate party at the stadium you need to find out if the stadium allows dogs in the parking area. You can usually find that out with a quick telephone call. Find out if they are allowed only in the Parking lot or if they can also join your in the stands if you have tickets to the game because you would not want to have to leave because your dog can’t go in with you.

2. Bring shade for your dog. Just like you get hot sitting out in the sun your dog does as well. If it is cold make sure to bring a blanket for bigger dogs or a sweater or jacket for smaller ones to keep them warm while you are outside for hours on end. Don’t forget the water bowl just remember no beer for Fido water from home is just fine.

3. Bring along food or treats for your dog. While sharing your hamburger and hot dog with a side of watermelon with your dog in your yard during a summer BBQ might not be an issue remember your dog will be overly stimulated and have the car ride home. Small portions of special treats will go a long way to a happy dog and happy tummy.

4. If you are going to be there for a few hours you might want to get an X-pen so you can set it up and let your dog stay in there to play a little bit instead of having to be on a leash at your side the entire time. This way they can lay down and relax once they get used to the new surroundings. It will also keep them safely away from any BBQ’s that are going that could burn them if they brush up against it and be an added barrier between them mouths and the hot grill cooking the delicious smelling hamburger.

5. If you are not sure how your dog will react try a dry run at a local High School Football game where there will be less people, cars, and smells from others who are tail-gating plus a much shorter ride home should it not work out or Fido gets a few too many treats from the high school students.

6. Never let your dog run around the parking lot off leash even if everyone else is inside the stadium its not safe for the dog and in most cases would be against the rules in place. You can bring along a chew bone or puzzle game to keep your dg busy but this isn’t the park and so tennis balls and Frisbee should stay at home.

Remember your dog is on display as a canine ambassador just because you want to bring your dog does not mean your dog wants to be there and might get very upset. Even if your dog thinks a tailgate party is the coolest thing ever the other football fans might not be as excited to see a dog at the stadium. Your dog will be looked at under a microscope so you want the experience to be as pleasant for everyone as possible. Scoop the poo and any pee pee that happens in the parking lot should be washed away with water. If your dog is aggressive or doesn’t like crowds of people an at home tail gate party might be a better idea.
