Military Dog Inducted into American Legion Post

Mira the Bomb Sniffing Dog

On June 30, the military bomb sniffing dog Mira – who was inducted into the Hamlet American Legion Post and the Knox Veteran of Foreign Wars post last year – died from old age and quite possibly lung cancer. Mira spent the majority of her life living with Marines in the deserts of the Middle East – she was based in Qatar but during the years spent time in Iraq and Afghanistan. She worked until she was 11 years old when she was retired to a farm. It is believed that Mira served in both Afghanistan and Iraq, and during that time she was shot twice and wounded once in a bomb blast. Though the details seem to be classified and the only record reporters are allowed to see said that she patrolled the Qatar base.

Neil Burg, commander of the American Legion Post in the Starke County town of Hamlet the one where Mira was inducted, said he has seen Mira’s military paperwork affirming details of her time in the military. Last year, that information was used so that Mira could officially be accepted as a member of the American Legion. They felt her time in the military was just as important as any other veteran and wanted her to be recognized by everyone for her service to the country.

She will be buried in the front yard of the American Legion post where she was inducted so that people will remember that she spent her life in military service.
