Movies About Military Dogs and Horses Serving During War

1. War Dogs of the Pacific 2009 – (Review from IMDB.com) War Dogs of the Pacific, even if it is 60% true, is an amazing story of people volunteering their dogs for duty(essentially junkyard dogs in the USA) and being trained for bomb sniffing, reconnaisance, etc. The bond between men(of 18 and a much less worldly 18 then today) and dog was touching and inspiring.

2. Chips the War Dog TV 1990–  (Review from IMDB) The story is about a family dog who is not disciplined and who is forced to leave his family and join the army where he has a difficult-at-first new owner. In the end, it all works out between the undisciplined dog and his new master, the soldier. It’s a very realistic film with enough action to keep the heart-warming story of friendship interesting. I would recommend this film to children from about 8-years-old.

3. War Dogs/Pride of the Army 1942 – A young boy donates his pet, a police dog, to the army to be trained as a war dog. The dogs used in this film were turned over to the Army after the shooting was complete to serve in the military. This movie is available to watch for free on the computer  keep in mind it is from the 1940’s and does not seem to have been remastered. http://www.archive.org/details/war_dogs

4. Dogs of the Vietnam War: Sentry, Scout, & Patrol – (information from Dog Channel) This behind the scenes documentary is unique look at the dogs of the United States Air Force. Broken into three parts, the film focuses on dogs training for assignments in Vietnam, including a USAF training film and features rare and unedited film footage of dogs and their Army handlers in Vietnam.

And for the Horse Lovers:

War Horse (release date is December 2011) – Follows a young man named Albert and his horse, Joey, and how their bond is broken when Joey is sold to the cavalry and sent to the trenches of World War One. Despite being too young to enlist, Albert heads to France to save his friend.

War Horse on Broadway (Lincoln Center currently showing) A spectacular hit in London, War Horse is the story of an English boy whose beloved horse is sold to the cavalry and shipped to France during WW I. Years later the boy, now a young man, embarks on an odyssey to bring him home. There are breathing, galloping, charging horses on the stage — their flanks, hides and sinews built of steel, leather and aircraft cables — life-size puppets strong enough for men to ride. And that’s just one element of this imaginative epic.
