A Malaysian man was arrested by the Immigration & Checkpoint Authority (ICA) officers at Woodlands Checkpoint on Monday for attempting to smuggle 15 live puppies into Singapore. The driver of the car was friendly with officers at the routine border check. Officers checked the different compartments in the front of the car, with no problems. When they started checking the rear seat, their suspicion was aroused when the leather car seat felt exceptionally hard to the touch. Upon further investigation, they found 15 listless puppies hidden underneath the back seat of the car.

The driver was immediately put under arrest. Preliminary investigations have revealed that the driver was offered RM 800 (S$327.25) by a man with the nickname ‘Fatty’. The driver agreed to the deal to smuggle the puppies into Singapore as he needed money for his wedding. Live animals of any kind cannot be brought into Singapore without a proper Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority (AVA) permit. The importation of any animals or live birds without this permit is a violation of the Animals and Birds Act, which carries a maximum penalty of S$10,000 and/or imprisonment of up to one year.
