Dog Attacked by Alligator Cat Killed

Florida Alligator

Its alligator mating season (Mid April through the end of May) here in Florida which means anyone who lives near the Everglades or Creeks needs to beware and take extra precautions. According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Alligators are more active during mating season and dogs and cats should not be allowed in the yard if you live in a potential danger zone. They recommend keeping pets on leashes when they are outside to avoid your pet running towards the smell of an alligator. Each year there are about 7 alligator attacks on humans and even more on cats and dogs.

Gary Murphy was inside his house in Palm City, on Thursday evening when he heard his West Highland terrier named Doogie making noise in the backyard. Murphy found his beloved pet in the mouth of an alligator that had entered the yard from an open area behind his home. The alligator eventually let go of Doogie, who needed veterinary treatment but is expected to recover.

On May 11th Palm City Officials had to call in a team to remove another alligator that had gotten at least one feral cat. The attack happened about 7 a.m. Tuesday May 10th in Palm Bay Estates. The alligator was about 8 feet long and sat near a large drainage pipe. It thrashed the cat for several minutes and returned about 30 minutes later for the carcass one witness says.

“Typically, if it’s 4 foot long and above and trappers are called out to get the animal out of a residential neighborhood the alligator is destroyed,” said James Dean, a Florida Fish and Wildlife trapper. It could have been hungry or someone could have been feeding him in the area. The trapper once ran into a man who was feeding an alligator bagels and cream cheese on a regular basis because the alligator was hungry.
